I'm curious if this was a link to eBay motors... Not to be out of line, but when were ebay links disallowed? If it wasn't an eBay link, then please disregard my post.
As an aside, as I'm posting this, I'm staring at an eBay banner with links to several auctions within the banner... see thumbnail below...

This site is tied into Google ads for financial reasons by the site owner (who has, I believe, an umbrella agreement with them for all of his many car sites) and you will see links and ads from not only e-bay but also a number of non supporting vendors due to this Google connection....
HOWEVER....
That does not change the site rules regarding member provided links to non site vendors. I believe that e-Bay is profit making vendor out there and to my knowledge, does not pay the supporting vendor fees to the site.

It's not even like I was trying plug an active auction. The internet has too many rules.

Perhaps you are correct, the internet may well have too many rules.
However, until you attempt to run an internet site based on a specialized marketplace (Z06's are still a very, very limited part of the automobile marketplace) and pay for the monthly bandwidth without requiring annual membership fees, I suggest you consider the reasoning behind some of the rules. We try to attact AND maintain supporting vendors on this site even though it represents a very limited market of only one Model car (Corvette Z06). The least we can do for our contributing vendors is give them a degree of exclusivity by not allowing links and contact info to other non-paying vendors. Many forums (like CF, for example) have very similar rules for similar reasons.
btw, your intentions ..."It's not even like I was trying plug an active auction"..... were never in question. We do not try and analyze the 'intentions' of the poster. That is too open for debate and could appear to 'personalize' the sites rules. The moderator in this case simply enforced existing site rules regarding non supporting vendor links. That's what he gets paid the big bucks to do!
