start button noise

OK, this is not a big issue, but why does my start buttom make a few quick clicks before starting or stopping my 08Z? What is it doing? Morse code to the starter motor??

Re: start button noise

Pressing the Start switch sends a discrete input to the body control module (BCM) notifying it that engine start has been requested. The BCM then verifies that the key fob, with the correct code, is in the vehicle.

After this information has been verified the BCM grounds the control side of the RUN/CRANK relay closing the switch side of it and allowing battery positive voltage to flow from the BATT 3 fuse through the RUN/CRANK Relay switch, engine control module (ECM) Fuse to the battery positive voltage side of the Crank relay coil. The BCM also sends a high speed GMLAN message to the ECM requesting engine start.

The ECM will then verify that the internal mode switch (IMS) is in Park, Neutral, or clutch depressed. After this has been verified the ECM grounds the control circuit of the CRANK Relay closing the CRANK Relay Switch Circuit and allowing battery positive voltage to flow through the STARTER Fuse, the CRANK Relay switch to the S-terminal of the starter solenoid cranking the engine. Ground is supplied through the engine block.

What your hearing is a series of relays that the demand your asking for, start or shut down etc. I still miss my C5 key.

Question for you?

Are you holding the button in? If so try just touching it once to start the car. It's not necessary to hold the button in.

I'll try the touching thing...I know the difference between touching and holding it in

I was told by the NCM guy to hold the button in until it starts or stops, sos I did...

You need to send an Email to the NCM Guy and tell him to read the owners manual page 2-24

Quote:
From the 2008 owners manual

2. When the engine begins cranking, let go of the
button and the engine cranks automatically until
it starts. If the battery in the Key-less access
transmitter is weak, the DIC displays FOB
BATTERY LOW. You can still drive the vehicle.
See “Battery Replacement” under Key-less Access
System Operation on page 2-5 for more information.
If the fob battery is dead, you need to insert the
fob into the fob slot to enable engine starting. See
“No Fobs Detected” under DIC Warnings and
Messages on page 3-55.

I think he was saying "until it starts to crank" which is exactly what I do and the manual says...I tried your way and it works too. Makes no difference in the relay noise as expected. thanks.
