Tiny specks in new windshield

My windshield was just replaced on my year old '08.

Now if I'm facing into the sun, when it's low on the horizon, I see thousands of tiny specks. I thought the new windshield was defective. The service manager checked a new 2009 'vette and lo and behold, it has the specks too.

I drove the car for a year and never noticed this on the old windshield. However the first time I drove with the new glass, conditions were so that I saw this right away.

Did I just never notice it on the old windshield? Might be for UV protection. Perhaps it's for the HUD?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Re: Tiny specks in new windshield

I have heard of tiny specks being present in brand new windshields of non-Corvettes, so I doubt it's an intentional design feature for the HUD. Can you tell if the specks are inside the laminated film layer or on the outside of the glass? I realize they're extremely tiny and it may be difficult to tell.

My guess is it's a minor defect that occurred in the windshield manufacturing process.

It seems to be inside the laminate.

I think I've always had windshield specks on my '07.

Just figured it was a holdover from a bad acid trip in my younger days

I guess I just never noticed in the '08.

Thanks Mike.

OK, you can see it too.

I asked Corvette, at their "talk to Corvette" Link, why the specks are there. I'm awaiting a reply.

Thanks for the reply,

Eric

Yep. Not a big problem but now I look for it in the light. It's there. Let us know.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. The last thing I want to do is get into it with the service manager and be wrong.

Re: Tiny specks in new windshield

I had this same problem on my 2004 Lemans Convertible. Just cleaned the whole car and drove into the a.m. sun...saw millions of tiny specks. I tried to clean it again and still had the specks.. Very frustrating as I expect perfection.

Turns out that the microfiber towels I was using left these specks behind and cannot be removed without a full wash. Now I use a special lint free (Windshield Only) towel with plenty of Invisible glass...no more specks.

I've also heard of guys using a polishing compound with a dual action polisher to remove minor etching of the windshield...but I've never tried it.

However, if yours is on the inside of the windshield (Laminate)...it may need to replaced.

Hope this helps.

I posted this on another forum and found that those who took the time to check their windshields on their C6 'vettes in the early morning sun had the same specks.

It's not a defective windshield, unless they all are defective. It must be there to block the UV rays. Great for those who left their tin foil hats at home.

I'd like to know if anyone with a C6 who tries to look for the spots while facing the sun, when it's low on the horizon, cannot find them.

Eric
