Two quick questions from a new owner . . .

1. Where the fuse to defeat the "quiet" stock exhaust mode and will this void the warranty?

2. In CA, the highest octane gas we can get at the pump is 91 RON. Is this of any concern with the 11:1 Compression ratio LS7 while driving on a hot Summer day?

See post # 10 here on the fuse:
Pulled the exhaust fuse
Some install the "mild to wild" switch ... I'm sure someone will chime in.

No concern, engine-wise; the computer will adjust to the 91 octane.

I suggest having a switch on the exhaust as the droning at 70mph in sixth gear is just horrible.

Re: Two quick questions from a new owner . . .

Thanks for the feedback guys, but I think I'll live with the exhaust the way it came from the factory. It's really not very loud just driving around at light throttle. But when you put your foot into it, the beast from within wakes up and unquestionably ASSERTS itself!

My sensitive but aged hearing tells me that the exhaust sound of the stock C5 Z06 is actually a little louder (deeper) than the new Z. This surprises me because of the different diameters of the exhaust systems and how much more of a deep breather the LS7 is over the LS6.

Has anyone else notice the stock exhaust on the new Z has a decel burble? It's kind of a very subdued whistling effect and you really have to listen for it. Must be a result of the butterfly valves closing when you lift and the sudden build of backpressure in the mufflers. Sounds kind of cool to me so I don't think I'm going to mess with pulling the fuse afterall.

The switch idea is probably a good compromise, but I LIKE the stock sound good enough as is. It seems just about right under hard acceleration, but not at all intrusive otherwise. Basically it is the best of both worlds.

Re: Two quick questions from a new owner . . .

Let a friend of mine lap my '07 Z06 at a road course last weekend while I listened from the stands. The car under full throttle to redline in 3rd and then to near redline in 4th is remarkably quiet. Heard more of a whoosh sound than anything. This exhaust is really too quiet for such a performance car. Time to save up for some Corsas. I hear the new ZR1 exhaust and maybe the '09 Z06 exhaust is significantly louder.

I must be getting old because I have the mild to wild and never turn on, except to see if it still works.

I am no mechanic and installed mild2wild in 5 minutes....

very easy. Of course, I love the sound of my 08Z and almost always leave it loud (or I should say louder). However, this is a 3rd car and I don't drive distances. Just for play.
