Z06 Purchase - Areas to Check & Reliability

I've been tempted by the Z06 bug a few times now, and am currently debating buying new or used. I've recently found a couple used 2006's in my area (in addition to dealers offering some discount on new 07's) and would like to hear from owners if there are any particular problem areas I should inspect when checking out a used Z06.

I've heard about the roof issue but not much else. Are these cars holding up pretty well under all the hard driving by many owners?

Re: Z06 Purchase - Areas to Check & Reliability

They take alot of abuse and are a pretty solid car. My concern if I were you buying used would be an improper breakin which is very crucial w/ these cars. I've owned a C5Z and now have an 08 Z and then and now a recurring theme can be a noisy differential w/ possibble failure. It usually leads back to improper break in. For the C6Z it's 1000 mls mainly for the trans and rear. After 500 mls the motor is pretty much good to go. Are you looking to keep it or do a 2-3 year turnaround. Then I would say get a warranty and look for the best price used. If you hate getting warranty work and are anal like most of us I would look for a leftover or new w/ a markdown. The spread on some of the used ones and a new one under MSRP isn't that much in some cases. I was offered an 07 used 5000 mls for $66000. and bought an 08 2lz for 72000.. I'm pretty anal and it was worth it to me because I intend to keep it.

You should be able to find huge discounts on 07 Z. I'm talkin ~8k off.

Look hard and you'll find em.

Re: Z06 Purchase - Areas to Check & Reliability

Well the wait for me is over... I picked up an '08 Z06 new from the dlr this weekend. Decided not to go used as I didn't want any warranty or reliability issues if it wasn't broken in properly. Went for the '08 instead of the '07 as I wanted the latest updates, just in case I keep it (and my sales guy, Genaro at Cormier, made me a nice enough deal on the '08 to push me over the edge). Jetstream blue w/Ebony interior. Love it!

It's been a while since I drove an '06, but it seems like the mods to the shift linkage & steering rack did make some improvements. Seems to be a little smoother shifting & has slightly lighter shift effort. Only thing I've noticed so far is the tranny is a little balky (more so when cold).

Re: Z06 Purchase - Areas to Check & Reliability

Best of luck to ya rbaker!! I just did a road trip w/ the wife up to South Carolina. I now have 2400 miles. Your gonna love your choice. I agree w/ your comment about the trans. It's hot down here but in SC it was 47 at nite. In the morning it got notchy going into second a couple of times. We'll see if it breaks in or continues. Take it easy for a thousand miles and easy on the brakes for 2-400 mls. You'll reap the rewards later w/less problems. Again best of luck!!

Re: Z06 Purchase - Areas to Check & Reliability

Way to go! Very good move getting a new Z06! So far mine has no notchyness in the shifter/trans. Far less than any other Tremec I have had. Shifter is dead on. I have had no battery dieing issues as some friends of mine had with prior year Z06 C6 cars. But I do back my car into the driveway and garage and leave it in reverse.
Remember to turn off that TC for the full power seat in the pants feel.
And yes..I leave that exhaust fuse out all the time. I have tried putting it back in and drive it that way. But man..way too quiet for my taste. Fast cars should be loud after all.

Again...congrats!!

Man, I'm chompin' at the bit to get my Z! I was hearing about paint damage to the rear quarters from debris thrown by the front tires. I quess some 3M sheeting can help with that.
