Z06 sunroof

I know there is a lot of discussion on making a convertible out of a Z06. I do not want to compromise the frame structure. I would like to open the center of the panel, leaving the magnesium frame structure in place. This would at least allow the sun to shine in.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to accomplish this ?

Re: Z06 sunroof

Welcome to
Here's a read on the odyssey of a C5Z toward targa ...
Restoration/Transformation of the Z06: Fresh Paint, Targa Conversion, Stereo, etc.
Would seem easier to do a targa on a C6Z as it shares the same architecture as the coupe ...
For the C6Z with the aluminum frame ... don't know how integral the top is overall structural rigidity. ...
If reinforcement is necessary - saw something recently about Dow "structural foam" ...
A more rigid tunnel plate would help as well.

Re: Z06 sunroof

If you look at the roof, you'll see it has a double-hump shape I doubt you'd be able to get a sunroof to conform and seal. A targa conversion would be a lot of work, and of course you'd lose the structural reenforcement when the roof was out.

DennyM, I thought the C6Z was a targa? No? Am I confused? I thought I remembered "flying roof" complaints with the earlier cars...

I think those were "reluctant targas" since only the outer skin detached.

As the xfordguy said ... the problem some have had is that the skin delaminates from the frame, which is bolted in permanently and not removable. Pretty sure, given the aluminum frame, that structural rigidity is the reason it's bolted in.

Re: Z06 sunroof

Don't mess with the frame. You can change it's "crashworthiness" status...and not for the better.

Re: Z06 sunroof

If what you want is a transparent roof that doesn't open, at least one fellow has done that. He took a Z06 roof and a transparent coupe roof and swapped out the roof panel itself, keeping the rest of the Z06 frame and mounting intact. Of course, he had to have the interior pieces custom-made to cover the roof frame, etc. I've considered having it done myself. I haven't gotten an answer back on the estimate, my guesstimate is at least $3k.

Re: Z06 sunroof

as much as I enjoy topless or targa driving I think the Z06 is worth the loss of upper sun light.

Nope, no joke. I just finished the conversion a couple of weeks ago. I ran the "Z06-T" this week-end at the HPDE at Putnam Park, IN.

It performed perfectly!

I'm not stupid, and I do know the difference between a "sunroof" and a "targa", without you having to point out that there "IS" a difference.

Your post about being a "joke" came right after my Z06-T post, so I assumed you were referring to my project.

This thread has numerous posts about both the sunroof and targa conversion. Everybody has a right to their opinion, and a right to modify their cars any way they like.
