Just saw this on Yahoo. How does a Z06 beat a ZR1 around the track with the same tires? I assume maybe the ZR1 just had too much power or the driver could not control the extra power. Im proud of both cars just hard to understand.
Tommy Milner also took a Z06 around Spring Mountain faster than he did in a ZR1. A Z06 setup like my Carbon should beat a ZR1 on a road track due to it's better balance and lighter weight. A drag race is another story.

Weight on a road course is key. There is also the issue of heat soak with superchargers.
I had my arse handed to me by a Lotus Elise track car that weighed 1900#s and had 150 less hp. He pulled me on the straights and walked me in the corners. To add insult to injury he said a set of Hoosiers and a set of brake pads last all summer because of the lack of weight. The tires and brakes for his car also cost less because of the small size. Our Z06s can use a set of $1600 tires and $700 brake pads in a weekend.

Sig pic WAY too big
And yet, the ZR1 ran a faster time than the Z06 in the Viper/ZR1 comparo.

I have driven my 2012 Z06 at Laguna Seca. There are some very sharp turns on this track. I wondered the samething about those speeds and figured "maybe" the Z06 is just a tad quicker on the inital acceration coming out of these turns. BTW, these new tires are about $2400 dollars out here. http://home.comcast.net/~tannera/images/LagunaSeca.JPG
There are a lot of factors. The gearing of my Z06 allows for gears 2-4 on almost any track, whereas a ZR1 may need 2-5. Shifting takes time unless you care not about missing a gear in your car and going sideways.
Overall, as a Z06 owner, I can say the ZR1 should be faster on bigger tracks. 150# less doesn't mean much compared to 130hp.
This is really why ring times and fractions of seconds are silly. Air temp, tire quality, driver, gear choices (some car mags don't use 2nd in a Z06 cuz they're scared...) all make a bigger difference than the core car.
Assuming all else is equal, the ZR1 is a faster track car on most tracks, imho, but clearly not by enough to even really care about but for bragging. For me, I'll keep my 06 just so I don't have to look at that plexiglass hood ; )
Wait, the zr1 had ps2s the zo6 had cups on... There you go. Car mag f's up a comparo again.

Reason: Oh duh! Check the tires in that article.
I think everybody understands the variables involved and how little things can make a difference in lap times, but it is fun to check out how bone-stock cars do on the track.
If nothing else, it proves that the Z06 and ZR1 are formidable track weapons and lends credence to the idea that you don't have to spend $200k+ to lap at an impressive pace.

I know this is off the subject but I can't help but throw it out there.
Ranger only got a best of 1 tenth of a second faster time out of a ZR1 on drag radials than he did with a Z06 on drag radials. Both cars having no mods. Weight is the key here. Weight was one of the my turn offs about the ZR1 when it was released. I thought they should have just said "Gas guzzler be damned" and put a set of heads, a nice intake and maybe some exhaust on the LS7 and called it good. All the hype about the "Blue Devil" was that it was going to be 2800 pounds.

Big horsepower is great and all, but I was personally hoping for a sub-3000 lb car. The lighter, the better.

I suspect an extra gear change?. That would definitely effect a 1/4 mile time. I dont know exact gear ratios for zr1. I assume z06 was into 4th on slicks. Funny tho how the mag ride and rear axle lengths, not to mention all that extra power,
didnt have more advantage for an expert.
