Okay, its official and the big news is incredible; there really is going to be a 500HP Z06. All we need to know now is how much and wait for the first '06es to start hitting the streets later this year.
My question is with an all aluminum, 427ci 500(+) HP engine with 11.0:1 compression, how can Californian's get away with only 91 pump octane gas? All the latest "specs" I've seen for the LS7, say this new Z06 engine "requires" 93 octane, but no gasoline stations in California pump anything more than "91".
Will the new Z06 be available in California? Surely it will, but what will be the consequences of only filling up with 91 octane gas? Will Zs sold in California be calibrated differently, i.e. detuned. How much of that lofty 500HP rating will be sacrificed?
yea , gm won't overlook the cal market-the trouble is the fat cat collectors who scoop um up and keep the price up there...i want one but not at the prices they will go for at the beginning...don't worry about smog that ls7 won't be running at anywhere near its full potential and fuel probably is one big limiting factor to 5oo ponies-if dodge can do it in the viper -i'm sure the general will do it better with better gas mileage-ford and chrysler only dream about our fuel economy motors.
The knock sensors and knock retard will take care of the Cal gas....however you guys will not have the HP after the computer gets done protecting the engine.

I thought higher octane fuel burned cleaner? Am I wrong about that? Why would the smog Nazis in Cali want lower octance ratings?
Octane rating is just a rating of how resistant the fuel is to "knocking" (pre-ignition combustion without the spark plug causing the explosion) during compression and heating.
Clean burning is more a function of cylinder head design, cam timing, etc. Of course, the cats are supposed to take care of any unburned fuel leaving the cylinders.

I thought everyone used some sort of FI in the mountains. Aren't there a lot of Supras, Evos, and supercharged Vettes there?
If it's fuel injected (FI), but not force induction (supercharger or turbos), the computer will still cut back the fuel delivered by the injectors due to less air going in to the engine at high altitude.

Yeah, I knew the octane helped it resist the knocking, but I thought it was cleaner too... no biggie... either way then, it doesn't burn any dirtier than lower octane grades, so why would the stupid smog Nazis not allow higher than 91 octane to be sold?
Just another reason to hate everything to do with vehicle laws in Cali...
Coming from car-enthusiast friendly Michigan, I think I would go insane if I moved there.
