I can't really suggest one as I have buddies with EFI Live and HP Tuners. I normally hit them up when I need to check or go to the local parts stores. They have them to sell and you can have them pull your codes.
There's something special about the C6 cars that doesn't allow all scanners to pull codes. I forgot what its called but I just read it on this board not too long ago. Maybe someone will chime in and clarify it.
took mine to track today and did a autocross and the check engine light came on and stayed on.Took it to buddies and he hooked his scanner to it and it didn't pull any codes. The light went away??Wierd.Didn't notice any issues at all with car.I've took it to track several times and never ever have had this happen.
Yea a full GM enhanced scanner supports all EPA and GM parameters and error codes which runs off a laptop is only about $400 and does much more then a error code reader.
If the scanner does not support all the controllers in the car I would not spend money on it as there are times when like the ETBCM is causing the ECM to trip into a limp mode or the BCM is seeing a column lock issue which effects the ECM but with the cheaper scanners cannot talk to any of the other controllers so you cannot see the real cause of the problem.
Cheap scanners that come with hptuners of efilive do not support other controllers or all the GM enhanced parameters and have a slow scan/capture rate.
Alrighty. For around $100, you can get a code reader that will tell you if the check engine light is caused by something really serious or by your gas cap being loose. These units step up in price depending on whether they show just the trouble code, the trouble code with explanation of the code, all of the above plus freeze-frame data, etc. I've got an Inova unit that cost me about $80 several years ago, and it lives in the glove compartment so I can get a quick and dirty read if some message comes up on the DIC that could be trouble, or not so much trouble. These are static readings, so capture rates are not relevant. Now, for more in-depth capability in your garage, there are all sorts of other software solutions that run on laptops that go beyond the ECM to other interesting modules in your car - it's all a question of what you are looking for and how much you want to spend. :z:
