All these price comments have me thinking Viper

I don't know guys, if the price is drifting in the $70+ range I am thinking SRT 10. I like the performance characteristics of the new Z but the appearance is still kind of a yawn to me. I think for around the same money you can get an SRT 10 -- that car has a strong presence, power, the fun factor, etc. Sure you cant "tell it" to make the NAV map go to "night mode" (it doesnt have a NAV system in it) but it will make you get goose bumps and a lump in your throat when you depress the go pedal. Also, I think the Viper is a Viper and not a DODGE! Just another opinion as perspective is set with the launch of the new Z.

I like the older Viper Coupes (GTS) better than SRT's. I just don't like the sound of the milk truck V10. One problem that could be with the new Z06 is that is looks to much like a regular Vette. If the price point is close I may buy a Viper, if for any reason just to see what it's all about.

I'd suggest you wait till the pricing is released for the new C6 Z06 coupe...

Right now, the Viper SRT10 market is somewhat soft...so if you look around you might find some really great deals...

The viper is awesome...

A buddy of mine just got one a few months ago...

Tons of torque...stunning car....great ride...beautiful interior...

A winner in any measure of a sports car...

Still....I'd strongly suggest waiting the few days to see what the new Z06 C6 brings to the table ...from a performance and pricing standpoint...

Using it everyday? No question the vette will have an advantage...ACtive handling is something the Viper seriously needs...(IMHO) Once you have ABS brakes...active handling costs a couple of hundred dollars from a manufacturers standpoint...and if Dodge wants a clue how to improve viper sales.....Just make Active Handling standard....

IMO 500hp without active handling is a huge disadvantage....for at least the idea of using the car everyday...These high performance sports cars and sedans....really need ABS and Active handling as standard...

End result Performance comparisons and pricing btwn the Z06 and the Viper? We all have to wait a little while longer..

I've thought about a viper srt10 too....especially after seeing what low mileage examples are going for....

The Viper SRT coupe IMO does have a styling edge from more angles.

A look on the VCA forum and the talk is about how it does not look as good as the GTS and they are in fear of losing the Fastest car crown. Others hang on to still holding the torque lead and anticipate aero will keep the car ahead of the new Z slightly. They are hoping for a card up the sleeve of DC with a 550 hp motor at production time.

Everyone seams to be very critical of the home team.

Somone commented on our forum about the lack of thought for the seat belts and welding a cage to an aluminum frame.

How would we weld a cage to the alum frame? at a reasonable cost. Would the rules change to allow an alum cage of some sort?

Really like the look and presentence of the SRT10. Definitely NOT impressed with the look of the new C6 Z06. What I'm gonna do about it? Nothing for now, just gonna keep enjoying my Z.

Formum members I completely agree and I AM A VETTE GUY!! I love the Vette but really was hoping for something more unique in terms of appearence. I like to goose the gas pedal now and again but I dont race the thing on the weekends and dont have plans of doing so. Just want a unique car, thats a blast to drive and a get-a-way from the daily drag -- thats why I am thinking if the price for a nicely equipped Z is close to the $70k mark I will more then likely hang up my flags and but an SRT 10, Viper Red or Viper Black. The SRT simply has a stunning and unique presence with performance to boot. The Vette has the performance but has a yawn factor -- AND $70k is to much to pay for a yawn ($55 perhaps ala the C6 Z51). IMHO of course!

All these comments seem to be formed around the looks. Let's talk technology. Not even close in comparison. Hydroformed aluminun frame, 6 pad, 6 piston front brakes, 4 piston, 4 pad rear brakes, near 50/50 weight distribution, and the list goes on and on.

If you are just wanting looks, you may like the Viper Coupe better. If you want precision, power, balance, sophistication and technology, you want Corvette. There is nothing wrong with either choice, it is all about what YOU want out of your vehicle.

Before you buy a Viper rent one for 2 or 3 days, it changed my mind and I'm thinking it will change yours too. Thats why I'm buying the Z06

Well - there is no doubt the C6 Z06 will carry the same inflated mod prices that the Viper does.

This again leaves the C5 Z06 as the ULITMATE bang for the buck car... when it was new..and now that it is an oldie.. and that would be stock or modified..

Oh - and we know very few of the C6 Z06's will be modded, so that will leave the MTI Z07 style 427ci cars as the ultimate King's of the Hill.

Long live the King.. hehehe

Calm down.........let's wait and see what the folks that manufacture the car say it will sell for. We will know for sure pretty soon!

SOME new 04 Vipers are being discounted 10k (the most I have seen, more like 5k is the "norm"). That puts it at around 74ish / 79ish.
USED 03's with 4 to 8k miles - low prices in the low to mid 60's. Low miles and all the requisite paperwork raise the $$ from there. There are plenty on ebay and Autotrader from no name "sportscar" dealers with NO history or papers.
Not all Dodge dealers can service a Viper. In order for the dealer to get DC's blessing they have to have different lifts, tools, and trained Viper techs. Not all Dodge dealers chose to spend the extra bucks to do take on the Viper sales and service.
Good luck!

Vipers not having any sort of active handling is the biggest downfall to me. Good luck keeping the car going in a straight line at WOT.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but early GTS's don't even come with ABS... scary.

The magnitude of the price increase is irrelevant at this point, pending confirmation of the final specs.

However some good points are raised in this thread.

Vipers are way more exclusive in numbers. We drive down the street and my kids see one and yell ...VIPER, and they do the same for Z06! That does not happen with Corvettes-- too many of them. The C5 Z06, while not as exclusive as a Viper, enjoyed a nice distinguishing feature in styling over the base coupe that I have come to like... The FRC.

I hope everything is wrong about the styling of the C6Z06 that has been leaked. If this car is a performance version of a base coupe with BLING BLING for 75K, then the perspective buyer with 75K to blow who wants performance, styling and exclusivity would be NUTS not to look hard at a SRT 10 Viper over a Z06. Resale??? Those C6 Zs will fall fast IF the rumored 20% of sales hold true.

Those folks aside, the folks in the market for the top performance bang for the buck in a stock show room car may find in the C6 Z, even at or near Viper price numbers....

T minus 1 day till the NAIAS show, press only, and we will soon find out.

Read the stats, the new Z06 will walk all over the Viper in every aspect. The technology is no comparison! Go buy a Viper so I will have one less person to compete for a Z. By the way I will personally seek all vipers out and blow them away with the air on.. Don't even think about showing up at the autocross track. Take care

Yeah right...it's nothing but paper now. Let's see in real world stats when they hit the streets.
