have 1,100 miles and when accelerating or cruising i think i hear what sounds like vavle tapping. anyone else hear this? is this just lack of sound deadening material and im hearing mechanicals? any help before i take it to the dealer is appreciated.
Yes, mine does as well. I thought it might be a problem, but it idles and runs great, no codes, and it seems like all of the LS-7's sound like this. The referenced thread seems to indicate alot of LS-6's do as well.
I wasn't sure what car you had. I just assumed it was a LS6. It doesn't seem to be limited to just the LSX engines because I also heard it in a C5R engine with a mild cam.
It's probably an aluminum engine thing. No need to be concerned though.
What octane gas are you running in it? I know it's not a 'Vette (mine comes at the end of this month), but my 2000 Durango SLT 5.9 owners manual says 87 octane is OK, but it pings/ticks/knocks under acceleration. When I switched to 89 octane, no more noise.

1500-2000 RPM under light load - yes. Normal to hear some of the valvetrain sounds in the car.
A lot of the LSX AL engine does that. It sounded like a small metal tapping sound, very buggish. Don't waste your trip to the dealers. They are bunch of morons, generally when it comes to LSX engine maintainence. I would talk to a local performance shop that had experience with vetts, last generation F-bodies. They would offer much better clue to as what it might be. I personally think it just the way that al engine is put together. Not much you can do about it. One out 4 would have this problem. It doesn't affect the car though.
I have the same noise and i was concerned at first because it is the kind of sound i had in my l98 before i threw a rod. But after researching it a lot supposedly it is normal so i stopped worrying. On a related topic i thought the marbles in the can sound coming from the transmission when starting out was weird too but supposedly thats normal too.

in a car with higher mileage it pings generally because you have carbon buildup on top of the pistons. which increase your compression ratio therefore a higher octane gas makes it go away. either get a bg carbon buildup removal done at a bg shop or pick a can of bg 44k. itll take care of it.
Maybe it the Aluminium Engine, maybe it's the Lifter rocker valvetrain combo...YES...Valvetrain Noise....From A Year ago at startup 9 miles to now at 7k the same...relax it's the way life is in an LS6 or so it seems
