The good news: the new Viper coupe, as of now, most likely will not be the 625 hp car that I hoped for. But read on.
The bad news: Viper hp is under-rated. My '01 RT/10 is supposed to have 450 hp at the flywheel yet it dynoed at 415 rwhp (SAE corrected) with no mods. Assuming a 15% hp loss via the drivetrain, this car should have put down only about 380 rwhp. 415 rwhp is more like 8% loss. Where did the extra 35 rwhp come from? My '02 Z, on the other hand, put down right around 350 rwhp which is in line with a 15% drivetrain loss.
So, take the 500 flywheel hp that the new Z06 will make, deduct 15% for drivetrain loss, and you'll be left with approximately 425 rwhp. That's only 10 rwhp less than my Gen II Viper put down. And everyone knows that 10 rwhp isn't worth squat in the grand scheme of things.
Assuming that current generation Vipers are under-rated as well will mean that the "real" hp (at the rear wheels) is still probably going to be higher than the new Z06 rwhp. The new Z has a slight weight advantage which will deduct some of the "extra" ponies that Vipers have.
So, if I were you, I wouldn't exactly go picking on the Vipers as soon as you get your hands on the new Z06

Im not going to be picking on viper owners becuase im nice and not becuase i cant
You are right however about the horsepower. SRT-10s dyno in the 440-450RWHP range from what i have seen which means they have a slight horsepower advantage just like the slight weight advantage the new Z will have. YET the thing that will decide the winner is gearing and rpms which are big differnece between the cars. The new Z will be a 7000RPM screamer with aggresive gearing. Viper are geared wide to make use of the power band they have. I remember in one of your posts on viperclub you said you gained near 4 mph or 6mph by short shifting at the track correct? what rpms where you shifting at?

Good point. It'll be a very interesting race to watch. Who's number 1 on Rick's Z06 list? When we racin'?
I actually dropped my shiftpoints from redline to 5500 rpm and gained mph and e.t. improvement. There's a point of diminishing returns above 5500 rpm in a stock Viper.
I absolutely love driving both cars. I often forget about the hp under-rating in Vipers and think that the new Z is just going to totally destroy the current generation Viper. Assuming both will come in at 500 hp, it'll be a helluva lot closer than most people think.

I am willing to bet a stock C6 Z will outrun a stock SRT-10.
1) The Z will more than likely use more aggressive gearing
2) It is about 300 lbs lighter
3) It will most likely have a higher top end, so the Z can just keep on going until it is ahead when the Viper gives up
Hmmmm, I won't bet but I'm not convinced it'll be that easy. I didn't realize it's a 300 lb difference. I thought it was less than 200? Makes a difference.
Also, are we talking straight line acceleration or road course racing? I don't know sheet about turns
According to Jim Hall (Halltech) GM has under-rated the C6 Z-06's HP so the Z-06 does not have the same problem (can you say lawsuit and shame) that Ford had with its Cobra HP debacle.
We will all just have to wait and see what the dyno AND the track tell us....THEN we can start talking smack with one another.

You are right, sorry. It isnt 300 lbs lighter, but close to it. It is actually:
3380-3130 = 250 lbs lighter.
And like previously mentioned, a few people are saying that the car is rated at 500 HP, but it really makes 512 HP. The word is that they rated it to 500 so there isnt any dyno dissapointments. FRC Tom, any word on that? Have you heard this also?
And i know this is all speculation, but if indeed the car is 3130 lbs, and it is really producing 512 hp, i dont think ( I could be wrong) the SRT-10 Viper will win in a straight line. Cant wait to get some tests for this thing.
