C6Z vs C5Z Weight

Curious as to why is the new C6Z heavier than the C5Z with all the aluminum and magnesium.

C5Z 3117 LBS
C6Z 3130 LBS

The C6Z has quite a bit more lux. equip., dry sump oil system, run flat tire, etc.

Although it's only 13 lbs. it is odd that it weighs more. It must be a combo of the gingerbread inside, tires, exhaust and the width, even though it's shorter.

A dry sump isn't luxury equipment. I highly doubt that it will have run flat tires either.

Dude, there is a comma between the lux equip. and the dry sump. And they have already said it will have extended mobility tires.

I probably could do without some of the lux equipment myself if it would save considerable weight.

Dry sump oil system: I'll take any weight penalty to have that.

Run flat tires: I've read they don't handle as well but have never driven a vehicle with run flats so I don't know from first hand experience.

Give me some upgraded sport seats even if they weighed more.

My '01 Z06 weighs 3040#'s

The reason the C6 Z06 weighs more with all the weight saving items such as
- Magnesium front cradle,
- Aluminum frame,
- CF front fenders and inner liners,
- Magnesium Halo
- Non retracting headlights
- Keyless Access (reduces need for large door mechanism)
- Smaller Steering Wheel,
is that it is offset by heavier items added to the car.

Namely:
- Slightly wider body
- Larger OD Wheel size F/R
- Wider Rear Wheel Size
- EMT tires
- Tire Pressure warning sensors
- Larger Brake Rotors
- Larger Brake Calipers
- Larger Brake Pads
- More Brake Caliper Pistons (+4)
- Strengthened Tranny with more steel parts
- Strengthened Diff with HD internals
- Tranny Cooler and Lines to front
- Diff slave cooler circuit
- Engine Oil Cooler and lines to front
- Longer Battery Cables to Rear
- Larger, Thick & Heavy rear glass
- Larger and Heavier (Than the FRC) rear hatch surround
- Non Titanium CAT back
- Larger ID 3" Exhaust System vs. 2 1/2"
- More Sound Insulation
- 1/4" Steel Power Shaft Close Out Plate
- Fog Lamps
- Optional Nav system
- Optional 6 Disc Changer
- Optional Heated Seats
- Optional Homelink Transmitter
- Optional Luggage Shade
- Optional Parcel Net
- Optional Telescopic Steering Column
- Optional Side Impact Airbags
- HUD and Thicker windshield glass (added in '02)

I do not feel that the dry sump will add much weight save the short lines from the pump to the reservoir and added oil capacity. IE. the pan will be smaller as a trade off.

IMHO they did not go far enough in lightening the car if they were contemplating adding all the weight.

What needs to be done now, possibly for '07 is to use:
- CF Hood
- CF Front Fascia
- CF Rear Fasca
- CF Door Panel
- CF Roof Panel
- CF Trunk & rear window surround
- CF Rocker Panels
- Magnesium Rear Cradle

Along with the above weight saving improvements racers will be able to eleminate a lot by
- Ordering the 1LZ options only
- Using lighter weight racing wheels, and racing tires without the pressure sensors
- Lighter Rear Glass (Plexiglass, Polycarbonate or Lexan)
- Headers
- CAT back Titanium Exhaust (Corsa will design this)
- 3/16" Titanium Power Shaft Close Out Plate
- Racing Seats.

Despite these further weight saving measures racers may find that the C6 Z06 will have a weight penalty applied until the C5's are phased out anyways.
