In the two weeks that I've had the Z, I've washed it 4 times. Call me anal.
On the last wash, I noticed the brake dust really starting to accumulate inside the wheels. So I wedged my hand in there and cleaned up as much as I could. Hard to get it all near the calipers and the front rotors are close to the wheel, so I couldn't really reach deep in there, but I got as much as I could.
It is a PITA to keep the barrels of the wheels clean (any wheels). I use a "motorcycle brush" (google it) to clean the barrels every time I wash the car. Between the caliper & wheel is very tight. I have an old skinny brush I use there (don't remember where I got it), but it is not as nice and will scratch due to the wire holding the bristles, so I have to be very careful with it (not a problem with motorcycle brush).
Take the wheels off the car a few times a year, give them a good cleaning, and apply wax - it helps, but they still get dirty. Just don't let cleaning get in the way of driving

On my C5 I clean with subject and P21S wheel cleaner, roll the car forward 1/4 wheel distance, and finish the inner wheel area. Waxing helps. 'Course my wheels are off at least once a month as I'm switching tires ...
PM me if you want SOS for brushes.

Several brands of spray wheel cleaners really work well. Go to Walmart, Target or similar store, look in the housewares - kitchen stuff. I buy plastic handled "flat" sponge type brushes. They work great on the getting to the barrels of the wheels. They are inexpensive; $2+/-
