Dazed and Confused Part 2

Went over to Andy's house today and he handed over his 08 Z06 to me to see if anything can be done.
Drove it for a while both street and hwy while scanning. All good.
Next to RevExtreme in Tampa.
Tracy and crew helped me tie her down on the dyno and then just let me have at it.
1st pull 442 and this is with a Varraram.
After some tweaking finally gother up to 463.
Put the stock filter back on and got over 459.
Less than 4hp from the Varraram.

Click for full size sheet.

Want to thank Tracy @ RevExtreme for putting up with me all afternoon.
Huge shop set up really nice. The dyno room is tits.

Re: Dazed and Confused Part 2

Hey Tom, I'm not that familiar with the Vararam, but is there any chance that it is not installed properly or could there be a seal leak somewhere?

Not that I could see Mike.
Maybe with another 1000 miles or so some numbers will come out of Andy's car.
Hell when I did Normie's car back in feb., bone stock after tune we were in the low 470s.
Got another 5hp when we pulled the filter out of it.
Got 469 out of Craig's car bone stock.
These cars both had over 3K miles though and both are 2006s.

Re: Dazed and Confused Part 2

Isn't the selling point of the Vararam system, the use of forward speed as a means to increase airflow? RamAir, pretty much the same idea Oldsmobile used on the 442 with the twin under bumper snorkel scoops.........

Dyno fans barely provide enought airflow through the radiator for cooling.......
Many believe the unproveable theory.........
Well I guess you could prove it if you put a dynojet in a wind tunnel and sync'd the drum speed with the tunnel fan!!

Actually Ken, this is not about the vararam but about the poor dyno numbers produced by Andy's new Z06. Not bashing vararam or anyone. Could have been any after market filter, but these numbers are????????????????????????????????????????

That is good work, Tom!

That's about the same increase Nick at MC pulled out of mine with a tune.
447 up to about 470 or so.

Sounds like Andy is back in the saddle now

Re: Dazed and Confused Part 2

Tom...my first baseline dyno at 1200 miles was 448/434 at the rear wheels. So 442 isn't all that far out of line.

His base line was 428 Mike.
The 442 when I got the car was after a tune and a vararam.
I managed to get another 21 out of her.
I just got off the phone with Andy and he tells me the power is not down in the engine but the new trans and rear for 08 is holding it back.
This comes from GM.
I will let Andy explain this when he gets back online.

Re: Dazed and Confused Part 2

FINAL VERDICT :

Sorry it took me so long to get back online...i've been in the process of moving and its been a nightmare!!!

First things first : I wanna give a big "Thankyou" to Geoff Skroupa and FRC Tom also everyone on this site.... "Final Verdict" being in, after numerous calls and alot of good minds on this we feel that that theres absolutley nothing wrong with the motor...period..putting out the same power as the stock 06 & 07's. We then started researching and working our way frm the motor back...in the drivetrain area for 08 there are some changes in the transmission and rearend...they made these changes to try and eliminate wheel hop and chatter..this is the area were we have focused on and seeing a little bit more power loss than what we're used to.
GM has also changed the steering in the 08's..."To hit the perfomance metrics, Birsching's team changed every major component. Friction througout the system was analyzed and materials and processes were altered to meet GM req. Gear set was redisigned with new gemoetry to improve how precisely and smoothly the teeth mesh together....a new algorithm was created for the Magasteer controller to provide higher on-center stiffness."
GM advsd "this goes the same for the transmission components and rear end to eliminate overall wheel hop and chatter..."

I was told the motor would never be put in the car if it does not meet GM power req. on the engine dyno. If it pulled low at that point it would have been tagged and sent back.

Bottom line here is we've been "chasing the dragon" so to speak...Geoff got the car up to 461..and FRC Tom same exact area...good tuning def. But no amount of tunning could resolve the powertrain loss because the 08's are different.

I wanna give another thankyou to Geoff Skroupa at NL..he went above and beyond the call of professionalism to try and get the VR kit to fit..he had numerous TTZO6 projects going on and dropped everything while "chasing the dragon"..

Same for FRC Tom...he did a great job and took the time on my car..also Tracy at REV X...to the many people who have put there heads together and given me support on this..I'm very thankful...

Now as far as the VR set up..did the car pick up ref the VR???? I think so, esp frm 4500 rpm on it really starts to live. However I don't think one should buy the VR and not have it tuned...KB and Honker etc. come with their own MAF codes...VR needs to be tuned..also the MAF housing has metal around it .......this elevates engine temp in the MAF area as opposed to the cool plastic housing on the other products. Further, the 08 VR set up has the wrong size tit plugs to plug in the bracket up front to the cross frame..the holes on the 08 are bigger than the 07.

Next is the H/C combo..I'm gonna run 12.1 comp on her..and that should wake her up.....as I said before if it dose'nt run jus konk it on the head...if that dose'nt work I'm gonna start adding alot of chrome!!!!"

Thanks everybody..now lets go drink some NITRO

Andy

Re: Dazed and Confused Part 2

Glad you chased it down.

Question thou, are other 08's seeing the same rwhp differences as compared to 07's and 06's?

That's a good question..I thought the same thing..time will tell, as other 08 owners chime in..
I even thought abt getting a 07 Transmission and throw'n it up in there, jus to see...
