How can I defeat or remove the forced 1-4 shift in my C6 Z06? It's really annoying when driving in parking lots and tight spaces. Anyone done this successfully?
I was pretty sure I read somewhere the electronics were different between the C5 and C6 when I searched on CAGS after I first got my car. When I did the search Jub suggested, it looks like the $20 kit does both though. CAGS sure is an annoying feature, but if it helps keep the cost of the car down, great. Isn't the EPA wonderful.
I installed the skip shift after the first time I tried to turn left in traffic and got 4th instead of second. I paid less than $30.00. If I'd have wanted someone else to choose gears for me I wouldn't have purchased a Z06.
It's common knowledge that the "Skip Shift" feature, which GM claimed was included to help MPG, is in reality intended to function as a "Granny Detector". Consider it a performance aid. If you're engaging Skip Shift, that's just a reminder that you're not hitting the gas hard enough. Kind of like the opposite of Traction Control, which cuts in if you hit the gas too hard.
In all seriousness, the solution to the Skip Shift problem is simply to use a bit more gas or let the car stay in gear a tad longer before trying to shift. The driving conditions which trigger CAGS are so conservative, only the most moderate of driving styles cause it to engage. I have mine programmed with LS1Edit so it never comes on (I think I set min RPM to 8K), but I drove the car almost 2 years before I bought the software and in that entire time the only time I ever had it kick in was when I was intentionally trying to get it to kick in.

I appreciate all of you who have taken the time to reply so quickly.
I'm going to install the override, so that the forced shift isn't an issue...ever. As Wes said, if I wanted someone to tell me how to shift, I wouldn't have bought a Z06. It's not an issue on the open road, but in traffic or at our local mall, it's a pain.
I did the same mod to my 02 Z06 way back when and my 06 CTS-V (same tranny) very shortly after I bought it. Ecklers, Mid America or any of the other big Vette aftermarket parts companies should sell one specific to the C6Z. Haven't looked at their catalogs in a while so not sure if the part is the same.

My new Challenger has the same skip shift feature. I fixed it on all the
Z06's that I've had because it sneaks up on you when you're least expecting it.
I've fix the Challenger the first chance I get. I heard when I bought a new 1995 Z28 Camaro with a 6 speed that it was an EPA requirement to cut down on pollution. Probably an Al Gore thing.

There is an even easier way to defeat this mod and costs about $2 and a couple of minutes. See this page (private page, not a business) WHT Z06 Mods: Disable CAGS
I have done this to my 08 and it works great. First thing I did. Essentially, all you are doing is putting a blown fuse in to replace the good fuse. But it has to be one of these types of fuses, a regular blown fuse could throw a CEL.
That's the article I read earlier. Like it says in the article, it doesn't work on the C5 b/c the fuse is tied to multiple things. I bet you could get to the wire harness and add the resistor in there instead, but the aftermarket part is only $20 and looks nicer. That makes more sense why the part works on C5 and C6.
If you're going to do work to the car eventually, and eliminating CAGS is certainly one of the first steps down that slippery slope, you're going to want tuner software anyway, there's simply no other way to do any meaningful work to the car. Buy the software, turn off CAGS, you don't need any kind of dongle or hack. And you've got the tool you need for just about anything else, in the future.
