Re: How to remove lettering and adhesive

Thanks for all the positive feedback. The red lettering makes the yellow pop! As far as the Z06 badge on the driver's side rear fascia, copied that from the awesome C6 ZR1. A word of caution though, even though I really like the inserts for the rear fascia, I would not do it again. To remove the stainless inserts was easy but the removal of the 3M adhesive that was left on the car was a major pain in the butt. I used goo gone and a heat gun and it took several hours over a couple of days before I was able to remove 98% of the glue. I was able to cover the other two percent with the red lettering! A lot more work then I bargained for... just a word of caution if you are thinking about putting on the lettering. Again thanks for all the help and positive feedback!

Your experience with the adhesive removal is very enlightening. Thanks for the info. I have a container of Goo Gone, and red lettering on the way, but have now tempered tackling that project until further evaluation.

FYI, the stainless inserts were put on in 2008 when I bought my Z, that was 4 years ago! I was not expecting to have such a difficult time attempting to remove the adhesive but I was overly cautious in using the heat gun because I did not want to damage the paint. My lack of experience using the heat gun contributed to my problem of removing all the glue. With that being said, the red inserts look awesome and was worth the work to get the look that I wanted. If you decide to put the inserts post some pics and good luck!

Hair dry and use floss to cut through adhesive. Used that trick on my old cars. Work like a charm. Don't heat too much or will damage paint

Re: How to remove lettering and adhesive

for future reference I know Sticker Shot works very well and 3m Adhesive Remover is another good one. Goo gone is ok but it takes multiple passes to get all the residue off if you use it.

Re: How to remove lettering and adhesive

I really appreciate the tips in this thread. I was about to take the door strips off my new Silverado (I park it like my 'Vette - at the back of the parking lot - so I have no use for them). I was going to just use heat and... pull... slowly....

The dental floss / fishing line is a great idea because my greatest fear was that I would kink the door panel trying to pull the large strips off. A 4" wide trim strip almost 3' long has a lot of "grabbing force" on the door panel...

I feel a little better about attemping this project now and I already have Goo-gone in the cleaning supplies closest but wasn't sure what it would do to painted surfaces.

Thanks again to the Forum for another free bit of valuable advice!
