I changed the oil yesterday and while I was at it, I changed the seals on the oil lines at the crankcase. There had been evidence of a small seep there since driving back to Texas from Winterfest last March. When I removed the lines there was at least another 1/2 gt of oil that drained from the lines themselves. No big surprise there.
I refilled the tank with 8 qts. of Mobil 1, started the engine and let it run for a few minutes, shut it off and checked the level. It was half way between the bottom hole and the middle one. Thinking the oil had possibly drained back into the crankcase, I proceeded to clean up and poured the old oil back into the empty containers. The old oil measured exactly 8 qts.
After driving about 4 miles, I checked the level again and it was still a qt & a 1/2 low. Oil temp had gotten to 150 and pressure was normal @ ~ 55-65. Checked it again this AM and it's still down 1 1/2 qt.
OK, do I top it off or drive it like this? The manual cautions about overfilling the canister. It's not full, but I know I put in 8 qts.
Hmmm? Are you waiting at least 5 minutes after engine shutdown and checking the oil on level ground? Is the dip stick all the way in before checking the level? Is it suppose to be "8" qts for a refill or 8-1/2 qts for the LS7? I "think" the latter has been stated in some of the literature I've seen. In any event don't take a chance on putting any more in. I would check with your dealer first, so your warranty stays in tact.
That is strange. If I put in 8 qts I show almost full. I wonder if you have the new larger 10 qt tank like is on the 09s?
Somebody would have had to change it when I wasn't looking. This is the 3rd oil change since I took delivery last October. Service manual doesn't say anything about adding an extra qt. after disconnecting the oil lines or removing the canister. ??????
Also, are you putting in 7 quarts, starting the engine, shutting it off and then adding an additional quart? That is what my owners manual says to do. When I put the full recommended amount in the car, it shows to the top/full level on the dip stick.

No, the service manual says you can follow that procedure, but it's not necessary. In reading the manual a little closer, it says to bring the oil temp up to at least 175, then shut the car off for at least 5 minutes and check the oil before 20 minutes has elapsed. Doing it exactly that way, my reading is a little higher, but still shy of the 2nd hole. The service manual goes on to say don't add any oil until the reading is below the hatched area on the dipstick.
Think I'll carry an extra qt. and check it often. Hell, what am I worried about? It started out with 2 more qts. than any other car I've ever owned.

Sounds like you got a defect. I'd take it back. Btw, I always prefill my oil filters before I install them. I figured it is less time the engine is running without oil pressure.

This would be a long shot - just thinking out loud - have you made sure your dip stick is the correct part for an LS7 pre-2009 model years?
I think the engines get the Mobil 1 "factory fill" at the Bowling Green facility. Maybe not. But there surely would be a "check pt." in the assy plant for making sure there is oil in the engine. The line workers doing this just might get confused or mixed up and put the LS3 dip stick in the LS7. If that ever happens and your car was the one being checked at the time, I think it possibly could be the explanation you seek.
Again, just a thought (more like brainstorming) . . .
