PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL - Power Steering Hose Fracture

PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL
SUBJECT: POWER STEERING HOSE FRACTURE
MODELS: 2006 BUICK RAINIER
2006 CADILLAC ESCALADE
2005 CHEVROLET CORVETTE, SILVERADO
2006 CHEVROLET CORVETTE, EXPRESS, SILVERADO, TAHOE,
TRAILBLAZER, TRAILBLAZER EXT
2005 GMC SIERRA
2006 GMC ENVOY, ENVOY XL, SAVANA, SIERRA, YUKON
2006 HUMMER H2
CONDITION
General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in
certain 2005 Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado; GMC Sierra; and 2006 Buick Rainier; Cadillac
Escalade, Chevrolet Corvette, Express, Silverado, Tahoe, TrailBlazer, TrailBlazer EXT; GMC
Envoy, Envoy XL, Savana, Sierra, Yukon; and HUMMER H2 vehicles. Some of these vehicles
may have been built with a power steering hose that is not to specification. Under extreme
steering maneuvers, such as turning the steering wheel fully to the left or right while braking,
the hose may fracture and leak fluid. If this were to occur, power steering assist would be lost
and increased steering effort would be required. On vehicles equipped with hydro-boost power
brakes, it could also result in loss of power brake assist and increased braking effort would be
required. If the power steering fluid spray were to spray onto hot engine parts, an engine
compartment fire could occur.
CORRECTION
Dealers are to inspect the power steering hose(s) for two suspect date codes and replace
them if required.

So it looks like the caught (read: held, delayed) vin 360 and
above to replace the hoses, eh.

Thanks JDogg.

As to why they didn't just announce this to all the affected
dealers I'll never understand.

Dear GM: Remember that Piss Poor Planning Prevents Proper
Performance. communicate with your dealers and
customers.

Recalls are something I will never understand, at least with GM that is. Everytime I have received a recall notice on any GM car that I have owned I end up informing my dealer of the recall How is it that I know before they do, shouldn't the dealer know exactly how to handle it before I tell them of it.

Now with my wifes VW, they are on top of it and have the parts sitting there waiting for you to schedule an appt. If they can do it, why can't GM

It is because GM communicates more quickly with the customers. If you keep things quiet, get the parts in and then tell the customers, the appearance is something of a well oiled machine. Problem is that you have been in your unsafe VW without any knowledge of an issue.

If you get advance notice, and believe me, the recall notice was released in the evening of the 5th, and I posted it here on the 6th. You as a faithful reader here, likely read it before the service manager got to read it on his email.

I guess I don't undersatand why ANY 06 Vettes were "recalled" since that sequence of numbers was not released for such a long time for "quality" improvements and the PS hose was supposedly one of them.

My guess,

Those vettes were already "released" (to inside GM and such)
before they could make the fix, hence the "recall".

From 360 upward, it seems they "got the fix" up to the vin
point where the fix was integrated into production.

The recall invovles something as simple as an inspection in some cases.

The repair time for the Vette is 2.5 hours, so working on a couple hundred cars is overwhelming to the folks at the plant. Thus the trip to the SecretBunker™
