I had my rear axle flushed and refilled today with fluid and additive for the SECOND TIME. After the first time, it took around 2000 miles and it was chattering again. Service dept told me if this didn't permanently fix it, the next time would require clutch pack replacement.
Anyone had to have the clutch packs replaced yet? If so, did that permanently fix the chatter?
HI there,
Yes, I have done 2 ZO6.
Both have been fine for over 2000 miles.

Flushed last month, after 500 miles, chattering again. Tech said re-service waste of time. Doing the clutch pack rebuild. This is a long time problem with Vettes. My car has 7800 miles and other than the occasional on ramp blast off, I don't abuse it in any way. Ordered parts and they are on national backorder.

Funny you should mention it - I was going to post a thread asking a related question tonight! I definitely am having this issue - most noticeable when backing up out of my driveway with some tight turning radius going. I recognized the issue and suspected that somehow the plant may not have put in the correct fluid (i.e. something for a clutch type limited slip differential).. However - I at first thought the Z06 had a Torsen-type unit which I didn't think needed that type of additive. It appears that there IS a clutch pack involved - and that says "conventional" to me.....
As you state the usual cure is to flush & fill with the correct fluid. Now I'm thinking I'm screwed since I've got 3K miles on mine... I hate to have someone R&R a diff unit if they're not experienced..... after my latest issue with a near-botched dry-sump oil change (thank God I was there ) - I don't know if I can trust the dealer....
Is the Z06 differential traction device indeed different than the one in the base car? That could explain the plant putting in the wrong oil...... WAKE UP GM

Had my diff fluid changed out at 4400 miles. graunching noise on slow right or left hand turns. by slow I mean 5-20mph. Noise went away. Now just waiting to hear from my dealer on the top replacement. Get her back today I hope. I'm tired of this rental malibu!
I had the same problem 1,000 miles ago. Diff was flushed and additive put in. Now the noise is back and the dealer ordered the clutch pack. Will advise results.
New posi clutches installed last week. Everything perfect, no noise at all. The old disks have very small (too small) grooves cut into them on their rough side that are supposed to allow lubrication. Dealer showed them to me. Without proper lubrication getting between them, they will make the crunching/grinding noises we have been complaining about. I was told the new ones have more spacing between them so the lubricant can do its thing.
This noise you are talking about, does is sound like a irratic clunk. No set pattern to it, and does it go away at say 35mph and up? I was thinking it was either my rear hatch or the roof panel. I had the roof fasteners and sealant installed as per the recall and the noise is still there. Is there a service bulletin out for this rear diff/clutch pack problem?

Come on GM - you've had the same problem since 2000!
I just downloaded the TSB file from NHTSA and look at this, GM has had this same problem on all Vettes since 2000 except for the 2002 model and the 2006 Cad XLR's have the same issue.
One would think GM could get their act together on this.

Ditto. Had the service done already... noise came back. Dealer has ordered the necessary parts for clutch pack replacement, but the carrier bolts (required to be replaced) are on national back-order.
