Shut off the car in Reverse??

The dealer told me when we picked up the new Z that you had to park/shut off the car with the gear shift in reverse...otherwise the computer does not turn off properly and it maintains a draw on the battery...which will cause the battery to drain if not started for a day. Is that true? And why would they do that?

This is a safety feature - this way the car can only be shut off when you have it in reverse and not by accident while you're driving. It's a bit of a pain, but...

I think some owners say that you can turn the car on and drive off with the car -fob or no fob- by not using reverse gear when shutting her down.

Others will chime in.

I can shut my engine off in any gear. I also leave it in other gears besides reverse when sitting for a long time also and the battery is fine.

strange comments for sure on that reverse issue...at least on mine they dont exist...

My 05 would tell you on the DIC to put the car in reverse. My 06 does not. I think they removed that detail.

Well all you C6 owners...
I have personally tested the theory that the car can be started WITHOUT the fob.

Here's a hypothetical: You stop at a local convenience store for your morning coffee. You're in a bit of a rush so you just leave it in first and shut down the engine. You walk away with the fob IN YOUR POCKET. Let's assume you either don't lock the doors or you have a vert and the top is down. I come along, jump in and push the START button. In under two seconds I'm driving your car out of the parking lot.

I've personally seen this done on a number of C6's. You can't imagine the look on the owner's face when I was able to start their car when they were 50' away with the fob in their hand.

A word to the wise...

Charlie
