Some warranty items done today..

Dropped off the Z at the dealer today (Courtesy Chevrolet in San Jose). Had the following done to it:

1) LOF (I brought my own Mobil 1 5W-30 and oiil filter and they charged me $25 for labor

2) roof panel recall. This is recall #05112 "Pained Roof Separation". It now affects all C6Z's. Visible, aside from fingerprint smudges on the roof, you can't really tell what was done, but the parts qty on the service order says the following:

Qty 1 p/n 88861400 Adhesive
Qty 10 p/n 11561612 bolt (wonder what the bolts are for?)
Here's the pic of the recall tag

3) rear end TSB. It was chattering a lot. They drained and flushed the rear end and replaced the gear lube (Qty 2 p/n 89021677) and limited slip additive (Qty 1 p/n 1052358). I could immediately hear a difference (no more noise!). Hard to believe all that noise was the rear end! It was chattering more than my 4-year old after a bowl of ice cream.

4) AND I FINALLY GOT THE ASHTRAY DOOR FIXED!!!! It finally stays shut now! What an annoying 7 months of having to deal with that thing constantly flipping open when I hit the slightest bump in the road. BTW, they did not have to remove/replace the entire console trim to fix it. All they did was remove the ashtray door itself (using a flat-head screwdriver...I did it myself...its easy) and they replaced the following two parts:

Qty 1 p/n 10324612 Latch
Qty 1 p/n 10324613 Dampener

I only had to pay for the labor on the LOF.

BTW, interestingly enough, I left my V1 in the car (mounted on the rearview mirror)

I told the service writer that I'm leaving it in there and didn't want remove it simply because it was somewhat of a pain to "aim" (but not mount). I turned it all the way off.

When I picked up the car, it only had 0.5 miles on it (just enough for the drive around the block after the LOF and rear end work), but the V1 was turned on (and the volume was all the way down).

Curious tech, I guess.

So do you have to ask that this be done (roof recall) or do they automatically do it? I'm going in this friday for an oil and filter change before I head to Bowling Green for the Fest. Also going to have my Koolmat installed.

Curious? I think not. Don't these beasts trap over 120mph? And they put on a half a mile... Hmmm....

Usually, if you have a very thorough service dept and service writer, when they look up your VIN, they should let you know that there is a recall and tell you that they need to keep the car longer. In this case with this recall, the car needs to remain there for 4 hours for the adhesive to cure, so they require the car to be there before 10 AM. TSB's, however, are different, you have to specifically point out a problem that they either recall from other cars and know there is a TSB on, or they look it up for you upon request.

The "chatter" you are talking about is different than the sound of the marbles rolling around in the transmission, right? I don't believe I have that problem, but just want to make sure. Thanks.

No, that's totally different (and still there). That's normal chatter from the transmission at low RPMs. Every Tremec or BorgWarner T56 has it and that's basically the same tranny in the C6 and C6Z (and F-body 6-speeds).

The chatter I was talking about was the rear end gears due to insufficient or bad limited slip additive.

The service writer told me that they drain and flush the rear end and then ship off the contents to GM for inspection and if it's serious, they'll call me back in for total rear end replacement under warranty. Since I only started hearing the noise recently and only put on maybe 500 miles on the car, I'm not worried about that.

For the roof recall is it just an inspection or is it a complete removal and rebonding?

Sounds like you're good until the next scheduled tune-up.

For those of you who asked... Here's what I found on the TSB for the rear end (I believe the TSB # is PIP3559, I think).

Rear Axle Chatter Shudder on Turns - keywords differential fluid noise oil #PIP3559 - (Sep 22, 2005)

Rear Axle Chatter Shudder on Turns

1999-2006 Chevrolet Corvette
2004-2006 Cadillac XLR

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
Rear axle chatter or shudder on turns on Chevrolet Corvette and Cadillac XLR.

Recommendation/Instructions:
If this is the first complaint for this condition flush and fill the rear axle with P/N 89021669 (in Canada 89021670) gear lube and 4 ounces of the friction modifier additive P/N 01052358 (in Canada 992694).
If this is a repeat complaint or the condition persists after the flush and fill, replace the right and left rear axle clutch packs following published service procedures.
After clutch pack replacement use 1.6 l (1.69 qt) synthetic axle lubricant GM P/N 12378261 (Canadian P/N 10953455). and 4 ounces of the friction modifier additive P/N 01052358 (in Canada 992694).
Note: 2006 Z06 equipped vehicles require 2.55 l (2.70 qt) synthetic axle lubricant GM P/N 12378261 (Canadian P/N 10953455) and approximately 190 ml (6.4 oz) limited-slip differential lubricant additive GM P/N 1052358 (Canadian P/N 992694).

Note: Export vehicles use 2.01 l (2.12 qt) synthetic axle lubricant GM P/N 12378261 (Canadian P/N 10953455) and approximately 150 ml (5.1 oz) limited-slip differential lubricant additive GM P/N 1052358 (Canadian P/N 992694).

Once the axle fluid has been changed the car must be driven in 8 - 10 SLOW figure eights to work the fluid between the clutch plates.

Just got a call back from my dealer... That's the correct TSB #

TSB# PIP3559
doc# 1705987

The doc and TSB reference a different p/n for the gear lube that my original post above mentions, but that's because GM changed the p/n. The p/n's above are the correct ones.
