Could someone give me a suggestion as to what it may be. Around 3500 rpm when cold it sounds alot like a ticking sound out the back exhaust (or motor) can't really tell, not the normal butterfly valve opening sound, but more like the motor ticking. Hard to explain but I've checked my oil level and all is good, the valves don't seem to be stuck because when it is warmed up I don't hear anything abnormal.
I just don't remember hearing this before. I have about 12,000kms on it.
Should they be adjusted, is it something to warrant bringing it in for?
No, the valves have no adjustment.
Not being able to hear for myself I can't make that call. If it makes you feel better then take it to the dealer but I'm sure they will say it's normal.
I am in agreement with JB, however, if you feel that there is a problem then get the beast to the dealer and go on record with the "problem". That way if there is any issue at a later date you have your ars covered. BTW, mine has the "ticking" sound when cold or hot and runs like the wind!

Traditionally the school of thought is wait until the oil temps are over 150 degrees before going over 4 grand on the tach..
At rpm's as low as 2200 it is making this sound I tried to describe earlier. I was wondering if maybe the valves in the tail pipe may be stuck open. Isn't there a fuse somewhere that regulates the opening and closing of them?
You can check the valves simply by starting the car and going out and checking. GM is not know for makeing quite or smooth running engines. As a tech I have heard this noise before. As per GM, I have to say it is a "normal" noise and that is considered "commercialy quite"

I will bring it this week now that I've the time to do so. Another observation is the time it takes for the engine oil to heat up. I can travel over 3 miles from intitial start up and not have the oil come up by more than 10 degrees f. I find that odd. Also the noise is very evident when accelerating quickly. If I accelerate slow I don't hear it. Like I said earlier it will make that noise from as low as 2000 rpm. Sounds like something in the air vents, almost like a leaf stuck in there thats the best way I can describe it. I will follow up once the mechanic has a look.

It is quite possible that it is a cracked rocker arm. I had this problem on my
'04 with only 2k miles on it. Turns out the fulcrum on the rocker arm was cracked. Have not heard this is a common problem on this forum but it did happen to me and I drive the car quite civil. It makes perfect sense that as the rpm's increase the sound will become louder and tick faster. This sounds exactly like the problem I had.
Trouble was in the shifter linkage. I have a new one on order. It would vibrate and send a weird sound up thru the dash. Its possible their is a bulletin on this. I will know more this aft. when I pick up the car.
