I was told by my guide at the BG Museum, who has worked for GM for 33 years, that it is unnecessary to change the oil after break in. He also said don't worry about mileage or time, the car will tell you when the oil needs to be changed.
What I gather from that is that you can certainly change the oil at 500, 1500, and 3000 miles if you wish...I'm sure it's good for it. But it probably won't "help" anymore than if you just waited for the computer to let you know when it's time.
The computer doesn't see all those little metal particales that may be there from the initial start up. I like the 500 mile change, 1000 mile and I change every 3000 miles. Just from the old school.
First Change - Definately between 500 & 1000 Miles
Second Change- At 3000/no later
After That - 3000 to 5000 DIC usually says 40-50 %
This gives you two flushes by 3000 miles
Always Change - just before or when you put the car up for
the winter if in fact you do. Never store with
anything but new oil.
Oil Change Interval - Two Schools - old & new
Old = 3-4 thousand miles
New = Go by the DIC that puts you in the 7 to 10,000 miles oil change window.

Hey...just because you guys admit to being old farts doesn't mean you STILL have to be old school. We're in the synthetic oil age! Old school thinking SHOULD HAVE rode off into the sunset along with Hoppy, Roy and Tonto.
