2001 Z06 vs. 2002 Z06 (long)

This is not a kill story! Just a performance observation

A friend of mine and I went out to the local road track (sandia motorsports) last Friday. He knows people that own/work the track. We had the track all morning for a $100! It was the first time I had ever driven a road course, I think I am hopelessly addicted now, but that is a whole different story……. He has a very nice red 2001 Z06. He is contemplating trading to the 2002 Z06. He wanted to verify the power was there in the ‘02s, so we swapped cars a couple of times on the course. He thinks his is a bit faster :( , I think mine is a bit faster . In other words, we had a very hard time with the SOTP meter. We decided that at the end of the day we would race from a roll a couple of times on the six mile stretch of open road back to the freeway. We both have the same mods, air intakes, and miles ~2500. We figured that was fair to compare the two cars, apples to apples. There was no point in trying to race from a stop, we were not trying to see who was better at launching. We figured that the best approach was to roll from 2nd gear at about 4k and 40mph and run through mid 4th gear (40 to ~110mph). It was decided by ‘bench racing’ that IF my car had the 20 extra horse, that I should have him by about 1 to 1 and a half lengths by ~110mph. We made the roll starts as fair as we could, remember we were not trying see who was the better driver, just the car. The first roll was right on, dead even start! At the end of second gear I had him by a nose, at the end of third gear I had him by about a car and fourth I took to about 110 and I had him by about a car and half. It took us a while to get the next roll even. We went through a few attempts and we had uneven starts. We eventually got a good even roll (although I still think he jumped me just a bit ) at the end of second gear we were dead even, third I started to walk away and deep in fourth at about 125 he figured between his front bumper and my rear there was about a car length. We did not swap cars for the roll, I know he is a better driver than me!

Just thought I would share my experience comparing these two wonderful cars!

Great info maule.. And congrats on discovering the lure of the track. Bet you guys had a blast!

Now with that baseline, you can modify one of the cars and re-test to see how much the mod did or did not help. Having that unmodified car as a reference under the same conditions is a very accurate way to test.

Thanks. Sounds like a pretty fair test to me all things considered.

Great thread..thanks for the insight...sounds like a fun day!

Both the 2001 and the 2002 Z06's are awesome machines without a doubt.....I like how you looked for the performance differences taking driver skill out of the equation..

Very interesting..

Enjoy!

Close enough to smell smoke!!!

Thanks for the update.............you are correct.........these are truly WORLD class machines.......either one.......
There are VERY few stock auto's of ANY make that will stay with either model.........and ain't it grand to live in a country that affords us the ability to be able to have the wherewithal, and access to such great machines........

Did you keep track of the lap times at the track ??

Careful on public roads, I might be the guy you meet coming the other way

Track times...

We did not keep track of track times. At the track, he had hoosiers on his and when he drove mine he didn't push it to hard. I don't know if we would have seem much difference anyway, it's a 14 turn, 1.6 mile track. I am told good times on a stock Z06 with F1's are in the mid 1:30's on this track.

I'd like to know what the instructors at Bragg-Smith think about the 2001 vs. 2002 Z06's on a road course.
