Sources close to Spies tell us that owners of the new SL are being innendated by research firms and Mercedes-Benz of North America, with customer satisfaction surveys and feedback forms.

Seems the common theme of the surveys is "How happy are you with the car and have you had mechanical problems".

But the most interesting question on these surveys is asking if customers would buy an SL500, if it had a cloth roof instead of the retractable hardtop.

Auto Spies perspective: When we hear this, only two things come to mind...

1.) MBUSA is experiencing problems with the retractable hardtop mechanisms and they are scrambling to figure out a solution.

2.) If customers respond with positive feedback on a cloth top, the could offer a much less expensive SL, maybe an SL350 with a cloth top?

You be the judge...but we think an SL350 is in the works...
