Gas-guzzler tax...

Got a funny question for you all. I was just thinking recently...

In California and some other states, there are things you can't do to your car because it won't pass emissions. A good example of this appears to be LPE's 427TT.

But then isn't it what the gas-guzzler tax is for? Basically in place for production cars that actually do not pass emissions?

What I'm getting at is, isn't there a way to mod a car, somehow have it inspected, and then come up with an amount to pay for gas guzzler tax? Basically making all those crazy cars CA-legal? Or do they not do it because it's too much a pain in the butt compared to only having to deal with car manufacturers?

I don't think so.. The EPA wants to see certain gas mileage requirements met, but I think it's a totally different thing than emissions. They don't test your car for gas mileage when you get it smog tested, do they? I can understand why California is so tough with all the poor air quality that they have.

Then again, the Womanator is your Governor now, so things could change.
