wife and i both are putting in 10% next time we can change it. i wouldn't put more than your employer matches, but both of ours will match 50% up to 10% of our contribution. just start putting in 10 and get used to it, before long you just manage doing it that way.
My wife puts in 10% and her company matches up to 3%, so 13% when it is all said and done. This has only been going on for about a year so there is not much in there. Money is elsewhere though. As for my work, I am lucky that I get a paycheck and ins.
I do the max the government allows ($14k), and will up it again when that goes up next year.
as of Jan 1 it went up to 15K per year. I am maxed out there. I don't know what it is supposed to be this year end, but it has gone up 1K each year for the last three.
