I had to go to Tortola BVI to swap out a marine diesel engine last Sunday. I flew to San Juan on US airlines and they partnered us up with Caribbean Sun ( little Dash 8 plane) to island hop to the British Virgin Islands. I get to my motel and it is 90 and sunny. So I reach in my suitcase to get my new $100.00 Arna sunglasses with my new bright blue glass straps ( they say SeaRay on them in large yellow letters). I can't find them. I forget about it and do my job. I fly back and when I get in San Juan, as I get out of the little plane (20 seater) I look over at the luggage guys getting the suitcases out of the plane and the son of a b#$*H as my glasses on his head. I go to the counter and get the "Ramp manager and he tells me if my name isn't on them or I didn't see he take them out he can charge me with false accusations.( now there are 8 people speaking Spanish all with sunglasses on and I ask how many people have their names on them, NONE) In fact most had Caribbean Sun on them) They make the kid come to the counter and he has my glasses around his neck. I named the brand of glasses and said that the straps aren't sold, SeaRay gave them to me on a visit. You can't buy them. They make boats not straps. What are the chances that this kid is a luggage handler, has the same NEW brand glasses and the same damn strap and I lost them on that trip??
He said he bought them, he didn't know the brand, And the straps. When I said you can't buy the straps, he said his brother who has a sailboat gave them to him. I said SeaRay doesn't make sailboats just powerboats. They told me to pound sand. I wasn't worried about the $100.00. I told them they had a problem with their suitcase system and I though that with extra security it was important to have honest people working for them.
They blew off and told me they could get me arrested for accusing him of stealing with no proof. The whole time he is wearing them and smiling at me. US- airline manager, Carribbean Sun manager and the POLICIA all were there and that is where I left them.
They will never get my business, that sucks! Maybe you can file a report with the TSA. They might like to know the level of security of that airline and baggage handling especially if they land in the USA.

You handled yourself better than I could. I think my emotions would have gotten the best of me and I would be in their jail at this time.
You did the right thing, however it was totally wrong for the dude to steal your stuff.
Next time you go, engrave you initials or name on the frame of the sunglasses. If they get stolen again, you would have absolute proof.

Sorry to hear about your travel saga. Just be glad you stayed calm. Bail in foreign countries can be tough to make.
Here are a few ideas.
1. If you bought your ticket from a travel agent, heck with the agency to see if there issued travel insurance as well.
2. Check with the credit card company you charged your ticket to. They may have extended travel trip insurance to you under the cardmember agreement.
3. Read you ticket stub. The carrier may extend insurance for lost or stolen items from your luggage.
4. File a complaint with the FAA. It will not be resolved unless the carrier's certificate is issued in the US. But at least you'll have a complaint on file.
5. Go to http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/e...orial_1028.xml and see if you can file a claim. Since TSA requires passengers to leave there luggage unlocked so it can be checked, they are quite liberal on their claims handling.
I hate dealing with ramp and gate agents when in other countries.
Yup, I would have been thrown in jail and banned from all flights before the whole thing ended with an assalted baggage handler. It would almost be worth it just to stay there over night and rent a car. Follow the little bastard home and give him a little American shock & awe. Make him eat the glasses and punch his mother for not teaching him better.
Yup, I'd be in jail.

You handled it well. I know it pisses you off to the max but not much you can do. However, there is someone who has his number and will take care of it all in due time. He will get his rest assured.
BTW, when I worked for CAT I did a lot of work on Sea Rays. The owners use to make me take off my boots before setting foot in the boat.

I had to write a few letters today, sent a copy to USAirlines also becasue I bought tickets from them and they set up Carribean Sun as their connections. I am not concerned about the $100.00 I can get the money after I fill out 10 forms and send the original invoice in for the glasses. By the way does any body else NOT keep sunglass invoices like me??
