Sam,I read the entire post and it does seem to make a lot of sense.Thinking back to my own college years,I recall that it took me until my junior year to decide what I really wanted to study;it's not always an easy decision, nor one to be taken lightly. The key is to find a subject area which you have a real passion for learning, and it appears you have done so.As you have discovered by now, history is far more than a dried-out set of dates and events;it is,in fact a fascinating field of study.Since you had planned on a teaching career, why not go on to grad school and teach at the college level? If you go the TA route(as many grad students do)you'll get some first-hand experience with teaching that will help you decide whether teaching or research is your personal cup of tea.I think you will find this a most entertaining and enlightening experience.Do expect 3 to 4 years of little money while you are getting your doctorate;most universities regard TA's as a form of slave labor,so the typical grad student is as poor as the proverbial church mouse-trust me on this one(I had the experience thirty-odd years ago).Good luck, and enjoy!
