So I get a call today, I've been selected

....It goes something like this. You've been selected to go to LA to help with the relief effort, we could leave tomorrow or it could be next week. Ok, I'll be ready.
Maybe I should go back a bit. I work in the law enforcement field for a department of probably 350 plus. They selected 10 to go to LA so this is what I would consider an honer. The problem is there is a promotional exam in 2 weeks. If I go to LA I miss the exam. I had to decline the trip to LA. Talk about a rock and a hard place. Part of me feels guilty and somewhat selfish for not going. I also think shouldnt the department make provisions for those going to help in LA?

You're definitely right. They should let you take the exam before you go.

I don't know what a honer is, but I would think the dept. would understand and make some kind of provision for you. Like taking the test before you go or when you got back. Seems like they would only have to delay the results.

Sorry to see that the Dept won't, or hasn't yet, made provisions for the horrific situation the country is finding itself in. As mentioned above, how hard would it be to let you take the exam early, signing some sort of non-disclosure agreement to minimize the risk of passing on test info to others who will take the test on time. The Navy has a process for those who miss advancement exams in situations like this. Seems like it would be easier for a small organization such as yours to help those out who are willing to volunteer to go help those in need.

Good luck to you either way.

I agree. There shoul dbe provisions and you should bring this up. Something like thi smost likely has not happened in the past so they have not taken that into consideration. Bring the situation up to your supervisors and get an answer soonest. Tell them that going to LA is an "honor" but so ia a promotional exam to move up. Going to LA is most likely not going to get your advancement as if it is an exam only. In the militray, our participation in events such as this would certainly com einto consideration on our evaluations. Goo dluck. Try and get both done.....
