Tainted Gas Sold in Louisville KY Area
Gasoline tainted with sulfur was responsible for damaging hundreds of fuel sensors in vehicles around the Louisville area, officials announced today.
Houston-based Marathon Ashland Petroleum acknowledged in a press release that it sent out a batch of gasoline containing "trace amounts" of elemental sulfur. The amount was enough to damage some cars' gas gauges, the company said.
The gas has been sold since May 3 in Jefferson, Oldham and Bullitt counties in Kentucky, and in Floyd and Clark counties in Indiana, said Harold Turner, a staff lawyer with the attorney general's office.
Officials believe only regular and mid-grade gasoline were affected.
Kentucky Attorney General Greg Stumbo said company officials have agreed to reimburse motorists whose vehicles were damaged because of the gasoline.
By this afternoon, the attorney general's office had received between 400 and 600 complaints, Turner said.
Speedway gas stations were among the retailers supplied with the faulty gasoline, Turner said. It was unclear how much faulty gasoline was sold.
