Hey guys,
Has anyone seen the game Test Drive for Xbox or Playstation 2? I just bought it today (for Xbox) and all I can say is "WOW!" If you're into racing games, you should definitely give this one a try. I've never seen such accurate replication of actual cars, which include a '01 Z, Viper GTS, Viper Venom (Hennessey), Ford GT-40 and Mustang Cobra R, and, much to my surprise and great pleasure, a '69 Camaro w/ a blower, '68 Chevelle, '69 GTO and a Hemi Cuda. There are a bunch of other great rides, too.
The cars behave according their actual horsepower/torque numbers, real-life handling characteristics, gearing, etc. For example, in a race I staged between the Z and the Viper GTS, the Z jumped out to a car-length lead right out of the gate, with the GTS beginning to pull it in by the end of second gear and making the pass by the middle of third.
Some of the game play is a little too arcade-like for my liking, but the detail of the cars more than makes up for this. Plus, unlike any racing game, including Gran Turismo 3, that I've ever played, this game has a 1/4 mile drag strip on which you can pit any two cars of your choice against each other. This facet of the game is exhilaratingly realistic. When you run the quarter against a buddy, reaction time on the button when the green clicks down makes a bigger difference than you might think for "just a video game". And if you go early, you're disqualified. Can't wait to see how the Z fares against the likes of some historic muscle cars, Vipers (aside from the one race I've run already), and Ford's fastest offerings.
Given the recent tragedy on Long Island involving a Corvette, I find games that offer a fair degree of realism are a reasonable alternative to road racing, which is tempting to do when you own a Z, or any fast car for that matter. Anyway, I digress. Check out the game if you have Xbox or PS2.
