What Helmet Do You Use?

ive been looking for a good (SA2000) helmet for doing some autocrossing and drag racing in the Z this summer. The one i really have decided to purchase is the Simpson Bandit N helmet in the metallic blue color. The best price i can get on it is 357 + Shipping. I was just wondering what helmets you guys run and if anyone has a Bandit and could comment on what they like/dislike about it. Thanks in advance for any help.

Dave

Dave,
Used that exact helmet all last year and it worked great for me.
Fit was good, but I had used previous Simpson helmets and knew what size to buy. I think the helmet is light, comfortable, and strong.

That said, I also have to wear a racing suit, long underwear, etc, etc. I raced at several races in the Mid West last year with temps and humidity approaching the 100 mark.
Driver cooling was a major problem for me.
So I just bought a new Simpson Shark Sidewinder which is setup to take an air hose providing cooling. I also bought a FAST helmet cooling system which I'll be installing next weekend.
Since I was getting a new helmet, I broke down and bought it with integrated HANS system posts and also bought a HANS system.

Just bought the same helmet from helmet city for same price. Have not used it yet. A friend told my wife to buy Simpson or Bell, Simpson had best prices. I like the bandit style.

Sub, keeping a cool head is important but have you thought about getting a cool suit as well?

helmet city is the site im going to order from as well. Does the helmet come with a shield already or do i have to purchase one as well.

as for the sizing, i currently wear a size 7 1/8 hat which fits snugly, should i buy a size 7 helmet or get the 7 1/8?

Sorry about the stupid questions, this is the first car ive had thats required me to own a helmet to race/drag

I bought mine at a show and they put the shields and the tear off posts on it there(you won't need them, I ran a dirt car). You might want to ask. I bought the Voyager because I wear glasses and the Bandit was too hard to get the glasses through the opening after strapping on the helmet.
Sizing is a tough call. I tried on many helmets before finding one that felt right. I ended up with one that was a 1/4 size larger than my uniform cap at work BUT I wore a balaclava when I raced too.
If you don't have a place you can go to try sizes I guess I would start with a snug hat size. You don't want this thing to move at all once it's on your head but you don't want it to give you a headache either.
My helmet also has a nomex lining that raised the cost a little.

Helmet comes with a clear shield, tinted are extra. I found instructions on measureing your head, the helmet fit bassed on the meeasusrements I took.

I agree with you. I have a Hayden replica RX7 Corsair and I love it.

I'm kinda ignorant to auto crossing, is there any reason you couldn't use a motorcycle helmet??

They are ok for autox and for some high speed events, but to be safe, a SA rated helmet will be acceptable for any event.
