Where does the money go?

While I'm so impressed by American generosity in the face of disaster, I have to ask where does the money go? By my crude estimate, we raised more than $5M for every victim of 9/11.

I believe the world provided more than $1M for every inhabitant of the Tsunami disaster. Before the tragedy they lived on $600/yr.

Now I predict we will raise $2-3M for every person displaced by Katerina. Where does the money go? Do the flooded people now have new $1.5 M homes constructed for them?

I don't think FEMA money will get one a new Corvette.

That is why I suggested giving to local groups. I am not a charity...but I can tell you the box of antibiotics I got today will not get wasted....it will be used. Please look at the addresses I posted. These places will use you money 100% for evacuees...

I can gaurantee that no one where I am at is taking a salary or getting any type of benefit (except a sense of immense happiness) from the many hours we have spent working.

Not too likely - I believe the death toll for the Tsunami was well over 100,000 people, with many millions of others effected by it. $1M per person killed would be $1x10^11 dollars - that's roughly the entire GDP of the united states for a decade, or the GDP of the whole world for about 2 years.

The Tsunami disaster was on a whole different scale, at least as far as deaths and the sheer number of people impacted by the event.
