160* Therm and tune

What is everyones opinion of using a 160*/170* Term with your tune.
What does the average summer driving temp go to when driving 60-70 mph on the interstate.
Same question in city stop and go traffic. All info is appreciated.
Is it difficult to install? How do you get the air out of the system after installation?

Thanks.

I just got a 160 therm with a tune. I haven't had it in the summer yet. However, I am having the problem with xxx reading on the coolant temp. It throws a code, turns off the AC and turns on the fan if you don't reach 170 degrees within 5 minutes.

I'm told that there is an easy software fix (turn off code 128). I'm waiting to have that done. Keep that in mind if you do it.

Thanks for the info. How do you like your tune so far?

Great! I have the tune, 160 degree stat, remote exhaust, Killer Bee intake, and ported throttle body. I have 345 Michelin PS2s ordered. Should be in tomorrow.

Car runs well and reliably. Power is smooth. I am quite pleased.

I've always gone with a 160 T-stat but thats for racing. Don't get fooled by Hypertech's Programmer #32005 that it will set your LS7 fan control if you buy there Max Energy programmer. Will only adjust to rear tire size or top end. No fan or RPM control available on it for the LS7.

On my C5 Z06 the Hypertech unit set my fans to cut in and out to run my 160 T-stat. Car ran about 178 all day long at the strip. All adjusted my RPM band higher. Called Hypertech in Memphis about the LS7 #32005 and they said just send it back since it does not do as advertised.

Did you get your fan set to start at a lower temp then 196 like the stock setting? If so how? Thanks.

Yes, 190. FRC Tom did it. I am pleased with it, but it clearly isn't a good cold weather setting.

Re: 160* Therm and tune

I had my fans engaging at 192 degrees after the tune. I installed a 160 thermostat and since the tune, the themostat and the earlier fan engagement my car hasn't had any overheating issues.

I live in AZ and I was sick and tired of seeing my temps onthe close to the 220 mark.

I just had my clutch,press/plate,flywheel & slave cylinder renewed by GM under warranty. They did check my computer to see if it was at factory settings. Just something to pocket if you get a tune make sure you can change it back to stock if your under warranty. I'll live with the normal ops temps of 195-207. No doubt it costs me some horses at that temp range but then again I'm not out to break any world records.

Re: 160* Therm and tune

According to GM, they can easily detect any ECM tunes AND whether or not the ECM was changed in any way, even if you put it back to a stock tune. There has been a considerable discussion of this on another forum, and it appears that GM can, indeed do this. So, it's your car, just be aware that depending on your dealership, and what warranty work you are claiming, GM could possibly decide that the tune caused the engine/drivetrain problem and deny warranty coverage. I am NOT saying they will, but we should all be aware that they MIGHT!

In reality, if you are going to a highly reputable tuner and have minor mods (intake, exhaust, 160 thermo) your chances of these things causing engine/drivetrain failures are nearly zero - but this is an economic decision by GM and we just need to be aware of its potential consequences.
