Has anyone experienced engine problems with their 2006, 2007, or 2008 Z06 with the 505HP engine?
Please see the enclosed product update I got from the Chevy dealership I purchased my 2007 Z06 from!
To make a long story short, my car has 7500 miles on it. I was driving it on 5-12-08, about 35mph, it felt like the car came out of gear, then it sounded like the engine totally came apart!
The dealership picked the car up the next day. After they examined the engine, I was told that the cylinder and piston broke, and the engine was totally ruined. At first I was told that they would send the car back to the Bowling Green Assembly plant to fix. I was then told that they would not pick my car up in California, however, they would send the new engine to the dealership for an installation. Right now my car is at the dealership getting the new engine installed……..
HAS ANYONE HAD THIS HAPPEN????????
I am not happy about it. I paid 93k for this car. Now it is not a numbers matching vehicle anymore. Also, what has GM done to prevent this from happening again? Luckily when it broke I was driving it easy. If that engine would have broke while I was driving 100mph, it would have spun me around in a circle………..

ive 40 k on my 07 z ,i run it very hard. no issues. if it seized up at 100 ,engine drag controll would have kicked in and been a bighelp. as far as matching #,s it wouldnt be a biggie to me. hey your getting a new motor and if you have ANY DOUBT about something on the car now is the time to do it .eg clutch,remote bleeder just ask the dealer to do it and you pay the extras
Of the thousands and thousands of LS7's the General has hand built, there have been very very few problems. However to hear some tell it the sky is falling.
As far as matching numbers are concerned, unless you are going to keep the car for 40 or more years the fact that is has a replacement engine will have no effect on the resale value.
I would rather have a brand new complete replacement engine than have the dealer try and repair the engine. What would you rather buy, a Z06 with brand new complete engine or one that has been rebuilt?
I'm sure others will weigh in with there thoughts.

I have just experience the same problem with my 2007 Z06. It has about 7500 miles. I was slowing down to a redlight and was shifting the gear into neutral when something just let go. After that the engine was grinding and sounded like someone sticking a led pipe into a fan. I am awaitng word fromthe dealership. I am a previous 2000 c-5 owner of 7 years and had no issues with my vette afte 110,000 miles. I purchased this car slightly used with 900 miles in september 2007. I was informed there were no issues with the vehicle and the car was being traded in by a lady who received the car as a gift from her husband. Have you heard if this has been a commom problem? How did your new install go?
It's unfortunate but this is becoming all to common. GM has a special program where the car is sent back to the factory to get the new engine. If it was just a few engines why the need for this drastic measure. This is GM, we know its not for customer satisfaction reasons. Sorry for the negativity but I sold my c6 coupe to get a c6z06. I'm upset because the car I want has some issues that I'm not sure I'm willing to gamble on. I track the car and it will be a challenge to get gm to cover it when it lets go. Since selling my c6 coupe last oct I have heard of at least 30+ people with blown motors. I personally know of 10.
I guess you also have to look at the big picture. What is the number of Z06's built and how many has the same problems? (Assuming that the car was not being hot lapped, modified w/ a power added, etc). I'm sure it's a pretty small number or else there could be a possible recall. Of course since the problem is happening to you, then the problem is a whole lot bigger. I agree with It L Go. Unless you plan on having the Z06 forever, the new engine would not matter. Also, when was the last time you were asked if the numbers matched when you traded the car in? As for me, I would take a brand new engine anytime.
Thanks for the input. I spoke with the dealership today. They did a cursory inspection of the vehicle and called GM. GM told them not to dismantle the engine and send it to the factory to have the engine exchanged for a new one. They reported they have 2 cars ahead of mine in need of the same fix and that I can expect my car to be returned to me around september. As I was thinking about it today, I realized I had my first oil change about 3 weeks ago. Is it possible there could have been a maintenance issue from the dealership that led to this problem? I am not much of a gear head and do not race the car on the tracks. Other than the occasional 130 mph sprint on the interstate, I do not abuse the vehicle. Soon to be bumming it in a rental for 2 months. I feel out of place in any other car. i will miss the drive.
When changing the oil, you do have to put 7qts in and start the engine and then add the last quart. I guess if they didn't do the oil change correctly that it would be possible to damage the engine. Just a thought. Since each engines are hand built, perhaps we should be looking on who built the engine and see if there's a pattern.
I beat mine everytime I'm in it for the most part. Not abuse, just driving like it should be. I do plan on keeping it. So I figure I have 5 years to find any bugs! Usually I start out w/ a new vette being nice and not driving it too much then I get close to the end of the warranty and I use it more because it's not new I guess and then problems start arising. Not this time. I use it as often as possible and get any bugs out now.
