bad electrical failure (08 Z06)

Car only has 2000 miles and 6 weeks and I had every system in the car shuting down due to lack of voltage.

The first message appeared on the dash displaying: "Check charging system"

It did not ring the bell but a couple of minutes later my voltmeter was at 11.4volt. My windows were rolling very slow. I checked the battery terminals and they were tight. I checked the alternator terminal and it was fine.

Kept driving and the voltage kept droping. The dash light was dimed. Called On -star an they ran a diagnostic. The diagnostic came clear, absolutely no failures at all, they did not even mentioned the: "check charging system" fail.

Kept driving and the voltage dropped to 10.9 volts and all the sudden I got:

"Check traction control"
"Check ABS"
"Check Dynamic stability"
I am not sure but I almost swear the steering got harder, I haven't read much on that but does the Z06 have any electrical aid on the steering?

Noticed that the car will charge randomly only if you were above 3500rpm.

Anyway, I barely made it home and called On-star again. The guy ran a full 15 sec diagnostis and came back saying that there was nothing worng with the car. I explained that the voltage was in the 10s but he insisted that not a single CEL showed on the diagnosis.

It is your turn guys, I want to hear what kind of bizarre issue I have.

Thanks!

Re: bad electrical failure (08 Z06)

There's a good chance it's the alternator. At high rpm the internal fan blades can come in contact with the windings, resulting in the signs you described.

Although the following TSB was issued for '07 cars, some '08 cars are experiencing this issue as well.

The fix is a new alternator. At the time the following TSB was issued, the new alternators had a different part number (15841234), although that may have since been superceded.

The difference being, the new units have a clutch which prevents the alternator from attaining excessive rpm and in turn resulting in the internal fan coming in contact with the windings. This was a fix for '08, but not all cars have them depending on build date.

Lastly, OnStar will not always be able to 'see' every code and may only be able to see codes that cause the CEL to illuminate.

Subject: Service Charging System P0621 DTC Stored - keywords alternator battery charge dic generator gauge light

Models: 2007 Chevrolet Corvette

This PI Supercedes To Include Looking For Short On Generator Bracket. Please Discard PIC4402.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment of a "Service Charging System", "Service Electrical System" and/or a "Battery Voltage Low" message on the DIC accompanied by DTC P0621 in the PCM. This may be the result of a shorted wire on the generator bracket or a cut in the stator winding that is caused from high engine RPM, usually because the engine hit the rev limiter. The internal fan is flexing and when it does flex, it comes into contact with the winding. A new generator may do the same thing if the engine is placed against the rev limiter.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Inspect circuit 225 for a short to ground on the generator support bracket, where indicated in the picture below. If no wire concerns are found, replace the generator with current SPO stock.

I had a similar condition w/ my C5Z and it was a loose starter connection and a loose ground solved at the dealer.

Re: bad electrical failure (08 Z06)

No speculations needed...you're under warranty, take it to the dealership. All of the trouble codes should still be in the PCM.

Re: bad electrical failure (08 Z06)

The engine completely died when it reached 10volt. The dealer found out the it was the alternator and they said that it wasn't ther first 08 either. the car has 6 weeks and 2050 miles.

They are replacing the alternator.
