iPhone/iPod touch owners

A new (free) app called "Rev Lite" just came out this month for car enthusiasts that appears to be too good to be true. This is just a "demo" version. The final version is still under development, but supposedly turns your mobile device into a full fledged OBD-II scanner. It also measures G forces during acceleration, braking and corning, and if you have a 3G (GPS) ready iPhone, I think it can measure 0 to 60 and performance on a road course. Of course, the next version will become a PAID app, but if within reason, like most apps are, this promises to be a GREAT resource for all late model Corvette owners.

Apparently, the way it works is you plug in a WiFi converter module (still under development, so not yet available) to your OBD-II port under the dash in the car and the iPhone/touch connects to it wirelessly. Then, you can monitor all the major engine parameters under PCM control and interrogate for active and/or history DTCs, and clear if desired; all the usual functions of a Automotive Scanner. I'm not sure if it can capture realtime datastreams, but that could be a possibility.

Anyway, for those of you with these Apple devices, you might want to check it out and contribute to this thread with comments.

Sounds interesting. Would love to see how much the wireless module costs for the OBDII port. May just be cheaper to buy a regular scanner at that point...

Keep us up to date and let us know when the module becomes available. I'll beta test.

Re: iPhone/iPod touch owners

Nothing new to report yet, but here's a YouTube video showing that the Rev app developers figured out how to wirelessly connect while monitoring RPMs.

Re: iPhone/iPod touch owners

Downloaded. Can't do much with it sans the OBD-II connector, but a wireless connection would definitely be appealing. Impressive set of (obviously non-functional currently) OBD Metrics with good descriptions. Looks very promising.

An iPod Touch would be perfect for this in a quasi-permanent mounted setup, rather than tying up your iPhone. A mounting solution where you could just slide or drop the iDevice down into a half-height cradle, yet still allow easy removal and minute alignment adjustments would be ideal.

Re: iPhone/iPod touch owners

Hopefully the OBD-II WiFi "module" will be reasonable priced making this new iPhone app, "Rev", very useful. The z06 center console cup holder opening is just right to accomodate the iPhone while driving so we're all set. Bring it on!

Re: iPhone/iPod touch owners

Another very useful iPhone (and iPod touch) app is PocketDyno+. It is on sale right now at 80% off the original price. It's almost like having a rwhp dyno and drag strip timing system in your pocket.

I hate paying for apps, but $1.99 is too cheap to pass this up; downloaded!

Since my Z is getting rebuilt, I tried it out (using the double-tap start option) with my '06 A4 2.0T S line quattro (6-speed auto in sport mode):

R/T: 0.64s
60': 2.14s
330': 5.88s
1/8mi: 9.08@78.19
1000': 11.84s
1/4mi: 14.16@98.05

0-10: 0.45s
0-20: 1.13s
0-30: 1.85s
0-40: 2.84s
0-50: 4.03s
0-60: 5.43s
0-70: 7.39s
0-80: 9.49s
0-90: 11.82s

Not bad for a single run on just a K&N panel filter, Revo stage 1 program and STaSIS catback exhaust. That's with an amp and sub box in the trunk as well as a full size spare wheel. Heater, stereo, seat heater and fog lights were all on as well.

192 WHP (3850 lbs. with me + 14g of 93)

I like that you can have it facing any angle; as long as it's stationary, it works.

The Time Slip screen is hilarious!

Re: iPhone/iPod touch owners

Key to accracy of PocketDyno+ is entering the correct "test" weight of your car. I guessed and entered 3500 for my stock '08 2LZ Z06 with about half a tank, plus 260#s for me and any extra cargo. Only problem, around here there is no safe place to do a decent acceleration "test".

Nevertheless, I agree, if you have an Apple iPhone or iPod touch, for only 2 bucks to download this app, you can't beat it. A great D-I-Y tool for evaluating "seat of the pants" gains before and after doing any performance mods.

Cool Re: iPhone/iPod touch owners

PocketDyno+ updated today; now it offers average and maximum stats, along with fastest run. Individual results can now be deleted, and now there is a dyno graph (WHP only) accessible from any of the individual results screens. They also fixed a pesky crash bug.

Re: iPhone/iPod touch owners

Yep, for a measly buck 99, this app packs a whale of a lot of useful features and functions. However, I still find it difficult to do any "independent" testing short of driving a hundred miles to the nearest drag strip.

Re: iPhone/iPod touch owners

REV: Shouldn't be too much longer. Still no pricing info.

PD+: Anybody verify the accuacy from 0 to 60 and the quarter mile? Cupholder seems adequate for temporary console mounting, but far from ideal. Have to wedge it in there with paper towels or something so it can't move while accelerating.

Re: iPhone/iPod touch owners

I downloaded "Dynolicious" for my iPhone which works great and you can set it up for more than one car . I found a little box that plugs into the XM receiver that allows me to plug m iPhone in and use the iPod functions through the XM touch screen of the sat nav system i.e. play tunes, also the steering wheel buttons change tracks etc.
Can remember what it is called but I bought it from Ebay and it works very well.
