Alcohol Injection Anyone??

I am thinking about getting a supercharger on my '07 Z and was wondering if anyone on here uses alcohol or methanol injection...

I talked to a local tuner today about going FI, and he recommended it, but said that he likes to run it w/o a tune. I come from the evo/sti community, and know that this is a big no-no with those cars. He said that it will add extra security and if the pump or something else on the system fails, it won't detonate the motor since it wont be tuned for it.

I want to be as safe as possible, but also want to get the best bang for the buck. I'm slightly confused right now...any help is appreciated.

Re: Alcohol Injection Anyone??

I started installing my methanol injection system today on my currently normally aspired C5Z06. When I am finished I will share any experiences if you are still interested. I also finished my oil condenser system today and it is working well so far. The only difficulty was the braided lines I put in to make it look nicer. They are tough to work with.

What kit is it? Are you getting tuned for it? And, do you have any pics of the kit?

Thanks a lot and sorry for all the questions

Re: Alcohol Injection Anyone??

I had an ATI D1 on my '03 Z, with an SMC injection kit. Without the alky it would only do about 500 rwhp safely (tuned), without KR creeping in and making things unsafe. With the alky, my tuner was able to get it to 571. More than enough bang for the buck there!

I did not like having to go to Home Depot and buy denatured alcohol at 11 to 13 bucks a gallon every few weeks. It depended on how much I had my foot in it, but how could you not have your foot in a car like that?

The brand is Snow Performance, pics on their site, No PCM tuning right away however I will be buying the HPTuners software and will retard the timing a little to get the maximum kick out of the system. The purpose of a system like this is to lower the intake temperature and add some power through the addition of alcohol/methanol. It was described to me as fooling the system into thinking it is getting 115 octane gas. So no more knocking from cheap gas. You can buy a bottle of special additive for the water/alcohol that has nitromethane in it for another big kick in horsepower. I will use winter grade winshield washer fluid that is rated to -20 degrees. It has sufficient alcohol in it to do the job and it is inexpensive. In the old days t(1920's/30s)they used
injection systems to get trucks over the Rocky Mountains but it was on or off with a switch. These systems do not spray continously as the are controlled by the electronics. So a tank of fluid lasts a long time under normal driving conditions. Considering how much it costs to add horsepower to our cars I consider this system very economical.
I bought the bigger 2.5 gallon tank with the kit and I am putting it in the trunk and I am routing the fluid line through the inside of the car instead of the outside. The pump and liquid tank will go in the the center depression in my trunk. I have a carpeted cover for that area so you will not be able to see any of the system except in the engine compartment. I plan on putting the electronic control module the the right of the air filter and the injection nozzle into the side of the airbridge. I will cover the stuff (wires/tubing) with black wireloom cladding so it is not so noticeable. I guess I need to fire up my camera again and post some pictures. Since use of NOS on the street is illegal in Virginia this is the cheap alternative to NOS. It is cheaper however you will not get the additional horsepower boost you get with nitrous but you do the best you can. Of course it is very complementary to forced induction add ons so it can be a incremental step on the way to getting FI as I am doing.

Re: Alcohol Injection Anyone??

Thanks a lot for the reply. I have methanol injection on my '87 Buick (SMC system), and unfortunately is not a progressve system - I will be chaning it to progressive within the next month or so.

I have heard only good things about Snow Performance from the STi/evo/Buick guys, so I might follow your lead and go that route on my Z as well...

Keep us posted regarding your feelings about this system!

Maybe you can save me a little time. What was the color of the wire that you tapped into for the MAF signal? Did you tap in at the plug that goes into the MAF or somewhere else?

Mine is not MAF variable. It is boost variable. Btw, I don't have a MAF any more.

Well, yes but it isn't completely tuned yet. My clutch isn't handling the power so I have to swap it out and retune for my big numbers.

When I get the money next year it will be STS Turbos. I will install it myself like the rest of the stuff on my car.

What clutch won't handle the power? How much power right now before tuning?

It is a spec III + and right now I'm pushing 7 psi and 12 degrees of timing. It's near 720 RWHP and a ton of torque. The car made 657 RWTQ at 3500 rpm with the boost turned up but then the clutch said bye bye. On the street its no problem as the tires just go away but strapped down to an above ground dyno with people sitting in the back, the weak link becomes the clutch.
