GM anxious to test the Corvette ZR1 around Nurburgring
Motortrend interviews Tom Wallace (corvette chief engineer) – 2008 Detroit Motor Show
“were anxious to get [zr1] to the ring because there’s some people trying to take our record away at the ring and I predict at worst 7:30’s at the ring, we think we might even see some 7:20’s”
Re: GM anxious to test the Corvette ZR1 around Nurburgring
As much as I have disdain for some of its appearance features, e.g. the hood 'window' and other bits, the raw performance is likely not going to be in question. What I do question is reliability and repeatability on the track. Although the Z06 set a fast lap time on the Nurburgring for example, it was only one lap, after which he implied he would not care to repeat it and stated he wouldn't have wanted to drive it another meter.
Raw performance is never a bad thing, but it should be tempered with other traits, which in the end make for a better vehicle.
That said it should be interesting to see what happens and what they have to say about it other than simply lap times.
Re: GM anxious to test the Corvette ZR1 around Nurburgring
They have tested it on the Nurburgring. However, these times are unofficial...
"Leading up to the official reveal of the Corvette ZR-1, a rare week went by when we didn't see spy shots of the General's new super coupe eating up the Nurburgring. But still images don't tell the whole tale, so InsideLine sent its spies to the North Loop with a video camera to capture an uncloaked ZR-1 making the rounds on the 'Ring. According to the men behind the lens, they were able to clock the 620 hp, supercharged 'Vette running laps 'in the low 7:40s' "
"Consecutive laps" are perhaps the key words there. That's something the Z06 didn't do. And according to Jan Magnussen, something he wouldn't do. Recall its best lap time was only for one lap.
And...
"Only a couple days to go until the official launch of the 2009 Corvette ZR1, it’s been caught doing hot laps on the Nürburgring. The most powerful Corvette ever built was captured on video running consecutive laps in the 7:40 range on a cold and damp track, in Nürburgring terms that’s pretty damn quick. ZR1 Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter said the ZR1 will beat any production car’s track record anywhere in the world, but we’ll have to see about that…"
And...
"GM unveiled the Corvette ZR1 at the Detroit Auto Show this year and the car just recently hit the Nurburgring in Germany to get some track times. Engineers behind the wheel claimed that the ZR1 was able to achieve lap times in the low 7:40s.
According to Edmunds the track was damp and the track times were rough estimates. When GM releases the actual track times for the ZR1, they expect them to be even better."

Re: GM anxious to test the Corvette ZR1 around Nurburgring
From what I heard at the C5/6 NCM Bash in April:
"We will return to the 'ring with a production ZR1." Production is scheduled to begin July 14. GM wants to set the record with a car right off the line.

Run off areas? We don't need no stinkin' run off areas.
I almost used the CAROUSEL as a run off area, into the wall!!! Hahahahaha
It was my first time ever on the track and I was trying to have fun but when I cam eup on the carousel, I nearly shit as it suddenly turned and came back about 30 degrees. My right tires gave the red/white track curb a sweet kiss and I lost both my center caps. Hahahahaha I bet the crowd was Ohhing and Ahhhing to see the GR8 WHITE crash, only, it never did!!!
So after my second lap, I made a pit stop to teh herren toiletten to change my underwear.
What a blast!!!! My times were pretty accurate at 10:04 with crappy brakes and unforgiven tires. I was not about to drive off the track, so, I was pretty conservative most of the way. Hey, I am happy!
