the Z06 is also one of the greatest cars ever built. one of the guys that works with me tells me every day "there's the guy that drives the greatest sports car ever made" his logic being the combination of normal service, driveability/mileage, and beating 911 turbos and F430 in mag reviews all the time.

But ya, the ZR1 is awesome!

Re: How do you feel about the new ZR1?

OK here is my humble opinion... I own a 2007 Z06. I like very it very, very much! I have seen the new ZR1. It's nice looking. I have not driven the ZR1. My Z06 has a 7.0 liter engine and it is not supercharged. The ZR1 has a 6.2 liter, already supercharged engine. With all the pettiness and price gouging that seems to be going on with this nice, new car, it seems to me that it would be simpler for me to just spend an additional 10K or so to get my engine supercharged. I think my car might even be faster than this 100k PLUS supercar when it's all said and done. I think that Chevy missed the boat when they did not supercharge the 7.0 liter engine for their new flagship car. It's a sweet car, but it could have been better.

Re: How do you feel about the new ZR1?

3-1/2 years ago it was obvious and has held true that many tuners would and have been making big bucks throwing force systems in late model vettes. I have since boosted my car. Back then I thought it would be nice if GM had a Z06 model with a supercharger option so we could see how it could stack up against other supercars. But everyone wondered how they could get it to hook since it would be really torquey compared to a Enzo with similiar hp which has the motor sitting over the wheels. Well GM compromised with a smaller engine, gearing and some fancy shock action, and we are still looking for the results.

Anyway, if anyone thinks 10 grand on a newer Z06 matches the ZR1 they are wrong, peroid. The Pistons would have to go and the gearing change, at least.

Re: How do you feel about the new ZR1?

Well ... a "fairly astute" long-time forum member here was having a side-bar with Dave Hill at the '05 Z06 Fest and says ... "so, Dave ... going with the 6.2 for the Blue Devil? " Dave says nothing ... "Thinking less cubes and FI?" Dave says nothing ...
I've *read* that the 7.0 block is not strong enough to hold the SC pressure.
I've seen the ZR1 "up close" and "in motion" on the track ... it is a very balanced package ... with numerous small tweaks beyond the Z06 and a BIG tweak ... BRAKES!
And it has a warranty ...
In the right hands ... an awesome ride ... unfortunately, too many will go to clueless money in the "gotta haveit" population.
We peons will just have to be patient ...

Not dogging the ZR-1, but I have to disagree with a couple of your conclusions.

First, torque CAN be managed with practice (and tires) at the strip, the track and on the street. While a mid-engine car like the Enzo certainly has some advantages, the 620 flywheel hp ZR-1 would not be the first Corvette to perform well with in-excess of 600 hp if you bring modified Z06's into the equation.

There have been many, many forced induction C5Z's and C6Z's with hp figures equal to or exceeding the ZR-1 numbers who have performed at the drags and on roadcourses and done it well.

Pistons DO NOT have to be replaced on a C6Z to put out hp figures (using forced induction) to meet or exceed the ZR-1 stats and as indicated above, I don't think the oem gears of a C6 or C5 Z require replacing either to get excellent track performance.

and yes...the dollars needed on a C5Z or C6Z to meet or exceed the 620hp ZR-1 stats can be done for $10k or less.

Now, I will agree with Zip and some of the others who've stated that the ZR-1 is more than just performance gains (styling, Brembo brakes, carbon fiber pieces, etc), but whether that is worth the additional money associated with the ZR-1 is a whole different debate.

Mike

Re: How do you feel about the new ZR1?

I beleave a test done on a z06 supercharger kit stated its traction and performance with the stock tires as "being laughable". Yes, it made about the same hp as the ZR1 and more torque at the peak, but, most of us know that isn't the average and not relative. This system was also at 6lbs of boost, not enough to lift the heads off, and blow the head gaskets. Using cast pistons on a boosted car may work, but, isn't reliable. Anyways, there are 250k vettes out there that will walk all over an Enzo. Being that the C6 Z06 could at least beat a turbo Porshe and a F430's track times in Motortrend in 2006 I wanted to see how a supercharged could do. And I have to give GM credit for really going for it, practically speaking. The car is state of the art. Ferarri is using GM's shock technology, and the things forged, piston toooo! Call it american pride, but, I would love to see this car kick ass over there!

Re: How do you feel about the new ZR1?

I've changed my mind. After owning a C6 Z06 I can only wonder what the ZR1 will be like. A Z06 on steroids with a 100K mile warranty.

I want one...I need one...I will have one, somehow, someday!

I guess the point I was contending is that for about $7k to $8k, you can put a low boost (4 to 4.5lbs) Procharger (or Vortech, etc) on a C6Z, produce as much rwhp as a ZR1 produces in flywheel hp and with practice and some decent tires, the traction is controllable enough to perform well on the strip, track, etc.
(IMHO, the cast pistons on the LS7 should have no problem taking only 4lbs boost, even with our high compression. Much more than that...different story)

Not trying to take anything away from GM's production of a supercar like the ZR-1.
I'm glad they came out with it....I hope it sets all kinds of records....if one shows up on my doorstep for free, I won't give it away.

Re: How do you feel about the new ZR1?

Yes, I forgot they were talking rwhp in that article so at 6lb it was 640rwhp, 'dangerous in a road race'.

Just some late night thought.
My guess is that you didn't know that the zr1 did 7:26.4 on nurburgring and the c6 z06 did supposedly 7:40. The C5 Z06 did 7:56 IIRC. Which means... it does outrun them all.

Re: How do you feel about the new ZR1?

What about the brakes??? those brakes are NOT cheap... to me one of the main advantages are all the carbon pieces a well designed boosted engine that will last "forever" warranty and the huge brakes!!!! exclusivity also..

I mean.. come on... Its worth it...

Re: How do you feel about the new ZR1?

I honestly think they did a good job overall but really DROPPED THE BALL with not at least offering an option for some real tires. I also would have liked to see 675HP due to the extra weight over the Z06. After all, you are talking about a $40k premium over the Z06. I think 675HP with factory R compounds would have really left no question in anyones mind. Right now, more than likely the ACR will be faster on the road courses.
