ZR 1 Gearing

There was a cyber grey ZR1 at the Black Hills Corvette Classic this past weekend with a GM rep. It was driven out from Michigan. I was told by the driver that the ZR 1 was geared to make the top end run in 6th. My Z06 does it in 5th. At 75 to 80 mph, the ZR1 was turning 2300 to 2400 rpms in 6th gear. My Z turns about 1700 to 1800 rpms in 6th gear at the same speeds. That could account for some of the lower fuel mileage when compared to the Z06. I thought that was interesting and I was not previously aware of it so thought I'd share. Also, I got to sit in it. I thought the side bolsters on the driver's seat were a little tighter than on my Z. I don't think you'll move around much in the seat. I'm about 6 feet tall and weigh about 230. I wondered if, on me, the seats would pinch alittle on my kidneys on long road trips. I'd sure like to find out in person. There was a door prize drawing for a ride which I missed by one number. Brad, you should have given me that charity ride. Maybe next year!

Re: ZR 1 Gearing

That's interesting about the gearing. I would have figured similar gearing to the Z.

Keep in mind the Z revs to 7000 while the ZR1's redline is 6500. Taller gears allow the ZR1 to hit 65 MPH in 1st gear at 6500 vs the z's 62MPH @ 7000. Mathmatically the ZR1 should be good for the following @ redline:
1st-65MPH
2nd-93MPH
3rd-124MPH
4th-150MPH
5th-185MPH
6th-224MPH

(I said mathmatically, no predictions)

Re: ZR 1 Gearing

We also were shown a new GM video of the ZR 1 doing a high speed run topping out at 207 mph even though it's certified at 205 in final testing. It was amazing. Rock solid. The little dips or cuts in the rear spoiler were wind tested to work with the front splitter. They nailed it. Things fly by very fast at 207 mph, but the driver wasn't hanging on or fighting it. Just holding it straight down the track. It's an engineered complete package not doubt about it. They didn't just throw in a new motor.
