I live in California and for several years have done business with Carl Black Chevrolet in Nashville, Tn. Also, I have given the dealership in access of $500,000 in business and have always purchased at MSRP.
In October of 2006 I submitted a check to the above dealership for my deposit on a ZR1 at MSRP. My check was accepted and cashed. At the time I was told that I was the first deposit. A couple of months ago I received a call from the dealer saying the they were in error, that there was another deposit six months prior to mine. I didn't say anything to the negative, but had a bad feeling as to what was going to happen next.
Just after the allocations were released, the dealer calls to inform me that actually they found another deposit given five months prior to the first deposit. So I am moved to number three on the list. I asked how many allocations are they getting. Two. I responded with who are you BSing, I see what you are doing, called a bidding war and I am not buying into it. Later that same day the dealer calls back and says hey one of the potential buyers may back out and they would keep me posted.
Today I talked to the dealer and was told that Carl Black Chevrolet has been directed not to sell any ZR1's out of the geographal area. I laughed and replied I have heard of some poor excuses but this is a new for me. I also said that as far as I am concerned Carl Black comitted themselves to selling me a ZR1 when they cashed my deposit check.
Short of telling them to shove it up their azz, I am just waiting to see what their next new excuse may be.
Tell you what, I can really understand why some people have litle or no respect for automoblie dealerships. Customer loyalty and their word means nothing. However, it sure is odd when sales are down and the dealerships are hurting, how they find your phone number and all of a sudden hey, because you have been a loyal customer we are going to show our thanks by giving you special pricing on a car of your choice.
I feel your pain sooooo clearly. I've gotten beat up by car dealerships too, and I almost writhe when I listen to them blabber about how service is their bread and butter and the customer means everything.
I almost think you have to be a bit greasy to even be OK with working in that industry. You have to be ok with taking advantage of someone, or, in a case like yours, giving someone a heinous shaft.
I'm sorry man, that sucks.

Unethical behavior is all too common.
Local dealership here told me ZR1's are an auction. But it is not an open auction so they will just trade one bidder off against the other.
Talk with your feet. When you walk way they lose in the long run.
I'm with you, the next excuse will be a good one - but still a slap in the face. Their word means nothing... I learned that years ago. Sorry to hear about your experience. Do keep us posted.
I know exactly what you mean or sort of anyway. I bought my Z006 Z06 from Spitzer Chevrolet, got one of the first one's made and paid $6k over MSRP and was happy to do the deal. The sales person I went through moved to EVS Chevrolet so I kept in touch and he had me as #2 on the list for ZR1 for over 12 months. I even called and emailed just to stay in touch with him. He verbally and via email confirmed I was # 2 on his list and even said he wasn't putting any more on his list. He said I'm only calling you and the guy in Arizona when we know the numbers.
What happened? When the allocations were released and the prices came out he sent me the following note:

Hey Johnie,
This ZR1 launch has been a mess man...I have not called anyone yet.......I will be in touch though....depending on what you are thinking price wise...let me know, will determine what I can or cannot do....
I am already looking for more ways to obtain additional allocation so I can participate at the level we want to.
More soon sir

So he immediately did as all Corvette salesmen are doing and wanted to get me in to the bidding war.
Yours though is totally different - you paid a deposit, I didn't - it was all verbal/email and a gentleman's agreement which means nothing today.
Your dealer could eventually tell you there were 50 people they forgot about in front of you. How do you prove any differently?
Car salesman, regardless of the price and type of car are all the same and always will be. It's in their genes.
After this ordeal, I will shift gears, I am done with GM and thier dealer BS. Corvette is nice but not the only set of wheels out their with horse power.
I ordered my 05 coupe really really early. I wanted the C6 body when it came out and I wanted it now. Dealer made me a written agreement and I gave him a good faith deposit. That same day I told him about a concept vehicle that I thought would be produced. A thing known as a blue devil. Note, this was way way back. The dealer wouldn't make a firm price as he said this was going to be a rare car. I've bought a few cars from this dealership and thought I had a good repore with them. Well about 18 months ago, the dealership calls me and told me a man wanted to buy a new Z06 insisted that he be first on the list for the blue devil. They told him someone already had that spot. But they called me and said this man offered them A LOT of money over sticker to be first in line. They basically called me and asked if I wanted to remain first in line. If I chose to, I'd have to pay the mark up based on the offer he gave them. I wasn't too happy but I wasn't born yesterday so I stayed in the number one spot. I knew that I could always back out at any time. I wanted to watch the market and the net to see if the car was actually going to be produced as the rumors had spoke of. So, as time went on, I just kept my ear to the net and watched as this car materialized. Low and behold, it did so I was happy to know I had one coming. Fast forward to current time. Now I am watching the market to see what will happen with my ZR1 once it is in my hot little hands.

Norm how much over are you paying for yours? FYI I sell cars.... Jaguar, Porsche, Audi. The dealer group I work for does not allow any markups on anything.
The new Audi A5s and S5s are fetching 5 to 10k over sticker in some places.... all of ours are list... as are all over our twin turbo 997s.
