For All You 1/4 Mile Racing Guru's

I will not be able to get my 2nd gear syncro fixed before the fest. Would still like to run a few passes on Thursday but, as I discovered last Friday night, no way to get decent times having to slow way, way down just to engage 2nd gear.

Question....Can I go off the line in 2nd gear? (I do my burnoffs in 2nd)
Is there any upside or downside to this? Is it harder on the tranny?
Power is no problem but wondered if I could do any damage ? Also wonder how much it will add to my times?
Any thoughts

It is much harder on the clutch, but won't hurt the trans. Certainly will hurt your ET and MPH, too.

If it were me, I wouldn't waste my time...although it would be interesting to compare times after you get the synchros fixed.

Wes, your right, of course...ET's and Mph will be greatly effected by starting in second but I thought it might stilll be fun just to do a few passes out there.
I think this Starspec clutch will hold up under most anything but I don't want to dammage the tranny.
Thanks for your thoughts........
Anyone else?

I know you are dying to run that thing but I would wait until everything is 100% before I put the whip to it. I am a little conservative though.

Have you tryed double clutching into 2nd? I would not launch in 2nd, but with the tork you have you could do it safely, if you diden't launch to hard, the clutch wear woulden't be that significant, probably. YMMV Ric

DO NOT LAUNCH IN 2ND!!! Before I knew much about cars (17) I had a guy tell me to launch in 2nd to reduce my 60'. I tried it and spun the clutch!! I was so pissed I saw the guy laughing with his buddies about the piece of advice he had given me. Had to replace the clutch about 1200 miles later on my basically new camaro. I did have a few words with the guy and I had the last laugh ( hey, he swung first, i just finished it!)

Burnout in 2nd .. ease out on the throttle .. especially if using a line lock.

Launch in 1st ..

This is the current way of doing it ....

30 years from now .. who knows, maybe a jet propulsion system ... no trans at all ...
