Auto Insurance at the race track

Does ordinary auto insurance cover a car at the race track? If not is there separate insurance to purchase for the race track or are people racing their cars at their own risk?

Most insurance policies will not cover you during "timed events". I tried to get racing insurance last year to run the Big Bend in Texas. I spoke to a number of companies that cover race teams but none covered the cars on the track - only in transport or in the garage.

imgrcomm - Check out the SCCA.org website. They do provide insurance on their courses. Rates and rules are @ http://www.scca.org/interactive/insurance.html#land
Hope this helps.

todds3760,
I looked over that site - it is liability coverage for putting on an event, none of it covers cars on the track.

Sorry, your right. If they don't cover it I don't think anybody will for a decent price. Call one of those exotic car rental places and see who covers their insurance. Maybe they can refer you to someone. I'm heading to the races this morning (Road Atlanta SCCA Nationals) and I'll ask around for ya.

EBZ06 - Funny story, I called my insurance company to change my policy, and after I told her I bought a Corvette Z, her very next question was "are you planing on racing this car" of course I said NO!

Usually as long as it isn't a timed event and is a driver improvement event ( ) then it works once.

I guess if you ball the car up at the track, just drag it to the nearest highway ravine, call the insurance folks and say, "must have hit a slick spot on the road"

As has been said before, my company covers car club type events, as long as they are not timed.

I like Silver Bullet's comment 'once'

my buddy matt.. i posted photos last month of him autox - ing and crashed the black c5 into the tree.. he said his insurance covered his car.. since he was time racing and not competitive racing another vehicle... i was amazed.. he said the estimate was 12k to fix the car... every panel was cracked or warped undercarriage.. the hood was ok.. !!
he said he was going to put the z heads and intake ... cam and clutch.. and make a beasty maching.. he said it still would not be as fast as a stock 2002 z.. maybe he should sell his ?
and get a REAL car.. ?

Thanks for your replies, in particular I would like to get insurance at the drag strip or other timed event. In the research that I have done I haven't found insurance to purchase for cars that were on the race track for a timed event. Except for luck and/or special circumstances it seems that most people don't have insurance when racing their cars. I wonder if they know that their cars are not insured and could incur a 40 to 50k+ total loss? If another car hit your car I wonder if you could collect for the damage if it is race at your own risk?

I have a policy on my camaro & trailer contents. It covers you at the drag strip except when your doing the run. I found a site in national dragster. www.racensur.com If your willing to PAY the price, you could probably buy life insurance wiel playing russian roulet. Ric

For a NON-TIMED NON-COMPETITIVE event, almost all major insurance companies will cover you.

Otherwise you are at risk.

I highly recommend doing a school or 2 first anyway. Then you are less likely to crash it...

www.drivingevents.com

It is much more difficult to drive these cars at the very limit than you would think, especially on a road course. Not as bad at a drag or autox.

Have FUN !!!

Manatee, I'd be careful.. I actually once heard a story about a C5 guy who wrecked at a road course and did exactly what you said... only problem was.. there were so many people that saw it happen and word got out... the insurance co. found out and got him for fraud :O

Ive seen a few mishaps and they were all covered... these were autoX events.... Ive even seen one event at Summit Point that was covered because it was a "driver improvement school"
