C5 Z vs Porsche 996 GT3 ... whats faster on a roll?
like the title says...
anyone ever have an encounter with the 996 GT3? I remember seeing a video of a C5 Z06 on a track, and the GT3 overtakes the Z06, and the Z06 wasn't even able to keep up to the GT3 on the long straights? is this normal?
I got my A$$ handed to me about a year and a half ago against a GT3 on the freeway rolling from about 70MPH.
This being said, this looked like a track prepped car (slammed, wheels, cage, etc.), far from stock. I was in a basically stock 01 (intake and lighter flywheel). If I had to guess, I'd say he pulled away from me at 80 at a rate of 1 car length every 1.5 seconds or so (he was very quick at those speeds).
Oh yeah, he was loud, very loud.
I seriously doubt any of you head/cam or forced induction guys would have any of the problems that I did, cuz I've been left by you guys too
We have a member on this board who owns a C5 Z and an GT3 - this should give some unbiased opinion.
Stock for stock a Mk1 GT3 and and even a 2001 C5 Z06 should be pretty evenly mathced. They are bothe 385hp cars from what I recall, both weigh about 3100lbs.
I remember some years ago running into a yellow GT3 on I10 in Houston and we were pretty evenly matched.
Pity I couldn't run into him again... :sneaky" - he may be in for a surprise... but we know 3 years later his GT3 is probablt not stock any more...
The 997 GT3 is supposed be a 450hpish car I think.
p.s. remember many GT3 cars end up beig moded to Cup or RS levels, and then all bets are off... you'd need LG's race car to take them on.
I've run against them several times at CMP in Kershaw on track days. With both of us on track tires, the GT3 and my 2004 Z06 (no mods except very minor LS1edit tuning) are pretty even on the straights, pulling on the GT3 slightly up to about 125mph. The Z pulls out of corners better due to its torque advantage, and CMP doesn't have straights that allow much more than 125 in my car, so I don't know what the results would be on longer straights, say, to 150mph or higher. I think the GT3 handles better than the Z overall though.
I have driven a GT3 at Road Atlanta during lunch laps, and it was someone elses car, so I didn't really get on it, but that car is like an atomic scalpel compared to the Z06, which is like a supercharged chainsaw. Both will get the job done really well, but the GT3 is much more precise.
depends what mods do you have on your car and what year is that GT3. I once raced a 04 GT3 and it was from a roll 20 mph, i only had headers on my Z and it was a neck to neck race. try racing the GT3 for not more than 1 mile and start from a roll.. should be a nice race..goodluck!

According to the recent official annoucement from Porsche, the new 997 GT3 has 415hp/300tq. Let's see what a chip will do on them Check the website, it's actually pretty cool:
The 996 GT3 is the best match for the C5 Z06 on the track. I have had a lot of fun playing with GT3s on track days when my Z06 was pretty stock as the cars were so even.

LoneRegister is the member with the GT3. Hopefully he will speak up!
I've driven a GT3 @ 10/10ths on a good-sized auto-x track. It's definitely a match for a stock '02-up C5Z power-wise. I believe their HP is underrated in typical P-car fashion.
It has nothing for my nearly-400 RW Z though...
As stated above though--very precise handling (the steering feel/feedback is just plain awesome).

I was playing around with a GT3 at Road America at a Track day 2 years back. We were both relatively stock. He was a little faster, and surprisingly it was on the straights.
He was also a as I found out talking to him after.
All I know is I paid about $35k for my Z, he paid $100k. As my kids like to say: Loser!
...the Z06, which is like a supercharged chainsaw.
LMFAO! That's the laugh I needed to finish the day!
The 996 GT3 must be fairly underrated compared to the 996 Turbo, is it? I say this as I got into a roll on with a 996T and actually pulled on him, about 1.5 carlengths through second and third. It was the third day I had my car on the road - bone stock '02Z that only trapped 113 at the drags until I fixed a few bugs...
I've got a video I downloaded of a C5Z against a 996 GT3 on a road course, and the Z wasn't really catching the P on the straights, it was under braking (!) and long sweepers that the Z seemed to have an advantage.
Were the cars both stock? Dunno... I wasn't driving.
