I was there. It was a C5 Z06. Brake failure was blamed. This same car was at Watkins Glen on the 4th of July and had an aftermarket "knockoff" wheel break and nearly caused a crash then. This is what happens to a tracked car that is not perfectly maintained using the best parts money can buy. 2nd rate parts an ignorning proper track prep of a car can cost more then just broken fiberglass and bent steel.
He was very lucky. He ran off at the end of the front st8 where speeds can reach 140. He ended up in a tire wall over a 100 yards off the track.

Hey Rick,
I was worried a little there when I first read the thread. Am I right that your 06Z is VY. Hope you and the wife are doing good. After you told me how many track miles you had on your Z, I figured you were there. Hope the Fest in the West happens and I see you there. Take care....

With all do respect, unless you know all the facts please refrain from making comments like this. This statement is far from the truth. I was at both events and I am familiar with the issues.
It's to easy to cast doubt than to realize all the facts before formulating an opinion. We all need to keep this in mind on these internet forums.

I was also at both events, same car had "issues" at both events.
If the driver and everyone else is okay then that's what matters. If he chooses to rebuild I'm sure he'll double-check everything before he tracks the next time.
yeah. i've actually had lengthy discussions about what to do in such a situation. we usually end up saying drop it into 2nd and hope you can "drift" off some speed. and if youre successful, change pants.

I don't think you will "pop" the transmission. I think a more likely outcome is a forced over-rev of the engine leading to valve-float and internal implosion of the valves and pistons.

Either scenario is better than tagging a wall at around 140mph.

The driver was OK...just shook up and a bit sore as you might imagine. I went over to his trailer after he had it loaded up and looked at it. I inspected the ABS controller and all the lines were tight and not leaking. Then, his friend pressed on the brake pedal and we heard fluid coming out of the RF brake caliper area. I couldn't see where for sure, but a line may not have been tight, or burst, or something along those lines, but you could definitely hear the fluid coming out.
I'm not sure if that was the cause or the result of the accident though. I'm guessing it was the cause!
Other than that, the weekend was great. I chased down this Ferrari Challenge car (really, really sweet ride) on Saturday afternoon and I think it spooked him a bit. He hadn't had to look in his mirrors the whole time and he ended up driving a bit over his head to be honest. He turned in to "Stevie Wonder" a bit late, missed the apex by about a foot and a half and tried to pinch it down...and spun right in front of me. He went off track driver's left and just barely touched the tire wall. I came in and checked on him and luckily there was no serious damage.
