Car Racing Divisions/Categories: How many are there?

Anybody know what all the different competitive car racing categories or divisions are or where you can find this info online? I know there must be plenty of different classes but I am curious to know the specs for each class. eg Formula 1, GT Cars, TransAm class, Lemans, etc. How many are there? What are the differences that make each class up?

Start with www.scca.org

That will keep you busy for at least a while.
