Yellow 01 Z06 out of the Austin area, right?
They are a nice pair. Have answered a lot of my questions and even given me quite a ride in the car!!

Congrats.

Congratulations to my wife Beth for her win by 0.003 seconds over the owner Barbara Beecher's Z06. She also took a 2nd place in the Challenge, unfortunately red lighting by 0.011. Live and die by the thousands! Unfortunately I wasn't able to race, as I decided to stay home and race my 125cc Shifter kart at the Austin Pro Moto: www.skusaonline.com

Eric,

Saw Beth's results this morning. Great job again Beth!! How does the challenge work? She finished first on times.

Where was Jose?

Well, I'll try to explain the Challenge, but it can be a little confusing...

Oops, sorry, somehow managed to submit that before I was done

The Open Challenge is the easiest to explain...basically it's bracket racing...slightly modified. All the class winners qualify for the challenge, then the runners up in the classes qualify based on how close they were to their open class leaders winning time, those closest make it in. The top qualifier is the class winner with the largest margin of victory over his/her class, and qualification goes down through the list similarly. (Only 32 spots in the Open Challenge.)
Then, the dial in is determined by the class winners combined time, (however if they ran a faster time with cones, that time is used to compute the dial in). Everyone else from that particular class who makes it to the Challenge runs the class winners dial in, so it's harder for them to do well as they have to drive faster.
Then you have elimination rounds until you get down to one person.
In the Ladies Challenge, it's run on index times..kind of...(L1 is made up of all stock class ladies with the exception of SS, which was moved to L2 with all the Street Prepared, Prepared, and Modified). So in the Ladies Challenge, the top two qualifiers, (winners of L1, and L2, whoever has the largest margin is the top qualifier, the other is the 2nd qualifier), run their own dial in times. The rest of the L1 ladies who make the Challenge must run their class winners dial in time multiplied by their own car index...same goes for the L2 competitors, they run the L2 winners dial in time multiplied by their own cars index.
And then it works the same as the Open Challenge.
Typically in the Z06 I end up giving everyone else between a .5 to 2 sec head start and I have to beat then back. It's fun
The only other difference from regular bracket racing is that time starts counting when the light turns green, not when you break the start beam, so a near perfect reaction time is a plus. I launched .011 too early in the last round of the Challenge and ended up 2nd. Just pushed the light a little too hard

Hope that explains it, it's always a little confusing the first time you hear it.

Thanks for the explanation Beth.

Is the challenge a separate competition or is it the final step of a pro solo?

It's kind of both... your finishing position from class competition determines whether you make it in, so it's the final step. And it's totally seperate, ie you accumulate points for both class wins, and challenge wins. At the end of the year you can potentially win your class championship, and the overall, (Challenge) championship. The Challenge is harder to do well in.
There are also completely seperate and larger contingency payouts for Challenge wins

Congrats on the great driving! I'm curious how long have the two of you been autocrossing?

Yes, we're going to Nationals You should come, if you've never been before it's just great! Lots of great people, lots of tough competition, and great courses.
Erik has been autocrossing 17 years, and this year will be my 7th. Erik took me to my first autocross kind of as our first date. (I say kind of because at the time I didn't realize it was a date

So does Erik give you car parts on your birthday??? Hmmm... some how I need to convince my wife that this stuff is fun; more car parts for me, I mean her! I am curious, did he have to club you with his caveman stick at first or were you a willing participant?

Seriously it is great that both of you guys enjoy doing it and are doing so well. My biggest problem is the lack of experience... Now that I've got a Z06, I also have less things to blame my poor times on ... oh well it's still a lot of fun even if I'm not competitive... yet... just need about another 7 years to catch up with the front of the pack

Actually I do sometimes get car parts for my birthday, usually for the Rx7 though...this year I got a new full face helmet with my choice of graphics But I get other stuff too
And no, he didn't have to club me...when I met him I had my 3rd gen TT Rx7, and I've always loved to drive fast...so he told me about autocross. Of course, mainly I think he just wanted to drive my car, (he was autocrossing a Neon at the time)

Racing in just about any shape or form is kind of addictive...I'm hoping we can buy another road race car soon and get back into that too
I'm glad you're enjoying it....and I imagine you'll get faster pretty quick. The Z06 is a joy to drive, and really a nice handling car. If you really want to drop your times fast you might consider taking Evolution driving school... I've taken them several times, and am about to do another as a refresher.. DJWorm took the one in Ft Myers before the Pro... but I don't recall seeing anywhere how he liked it.
